Scouting Vermont
The Catamounts enter tonight's game with a 4-0 record after
winning the TD Bank Classic on Saturday. Vermont picked up wins over Colgate
and St. Joseph's (Pa.). The win was Vermont's first at the TD Bank since the
2007 season. The Catamounts have three players averaging double figures and are
led by Lauren Buschmann who is averaging 13.0 points per game. Shanai Heber and
Niki Taylor are averaging 10.3 and 10.0 points, respectively. This is head
coach Lori McBride Gear's second season on the Vermont sidelines.
Steen Named to TD
Bank Classic All-Tournament Team
Junior guard Faziah Steen was named to the TD Bank Classic
All-Tournament team for her efforts over the weekend. Steen led Dartmouth in
scoring with 12 points against St. Joseph's (Pa.) and a season-best 19 points
in a win over Colgate. Steen is leading the Big Green in scoring this season
with 13.3 points per game. Steen was
also named to the Ivy League Honor Roll for her efforts this week.
Headed Back to
Burlington
Tonight's game is Dartmouth's third consecutive game at
Vermont's Patrick Gymnasium. The Big Green played in Vermont's TD Bank Classic
Nov. 18-19 and are back in Burlington for tonight's non-conference
matchup. The last time the teams squared
off in Burlington was during the 2009-10 season
Road Trippin'
The Big Green continues its season-opening road swing with
tonight's game. Dartmouth is playing its fourth consecutive road or neutral
site game and has one more road game on Saturday before opening the 2011 home
slate on Nov. 30 against New Hampshire. Last season, Dartmouth opened the
season with four consecutive road or neutral games. The last time Dartmouth
opened a season with home games was during the 2009-10 season when they opened
with three straight home contests.
Steen Loves Double
Figures
Junior Faziah Steen recorded her second consecutive game in
double figures with a season-best 19 points in Dartmouth's win over Colgate.
Steen has been in double figures in 12 of Dartmouth's last 15 games dating back
to last season and has been Dartmouth's leading scorer in 12 of the last 18
games dating back to last season.
Close to
Double-Doubles
The Big Green had several players approaching double-doubles
over the weekend. Kamala Thompson was two rebounds away from her first
collegiate double-double in the Colgate game while Faziah Steen was five
rebounds away from a double-double against the Raiders. Additionally, Milica Toskovic was one rebound
shy of her first game with double figure rebounds against Colgate.
Zimmer Hits the
Hardwood
Nicola Zimmer made her season debut in Dartmouth's first
game of the TD Bank Classic. The sophomore guard was limited to just 13 games
last season and missed the opener at Kansas State. Despite missing the first
game, Zimmer is leading the Big Green in assists with five in two games.
Frosh In Double
Figures
Freshmen Kamala Thompson and Milica Toskovic recorded their
first games in double figures at the TD Bank Classic. Toskovic tallied 10
points in the loss to St. Joseph's (Pa.) while Thompson also hit 10 points in
the win over Colgate. Each of Dartmouth's four freshmen that have seen action
this year have recorded points.
Dosenko Starting To
Warmup
Senior forward Sasha Dosenko had a rough start to the
2011-12 season. Prior to the second half of the Colgate game, she was 0-of-17
from the floor. She started to put things together in the second half of the
Colgate game and finished the game 3-of-6 from the floor and 1-of-1 from the
charity stripe for seven points in the second half.
Steen Hits 600
Junior captain Faziah Steen picked up her 600th career point
in Dartmouth's season-opening loss to Kansas State. Steen is one of 40 Big
Green players all-time to score at least 600 career points.
Dartmouth Defense is
Stingy
Dartmouth's defensive excellence continued throughout the TD
Bank Classic. Over the two games, Dartmouth forced 25 turnovers and held
Colgate to just 24.3 percent shooting (17-of-70) and just 12.9 percent
(4-of-31) in the first half. In each of
Dartmouth's three games this season, they have forced double figure turnovers and
are forcing an average of 17.6 per game.
The Streak is Over
Dartmouth's win over Colgate snapped a seven-game losing
streak, dating back to last season, for the Big Green. The seven game skid ties
the longest losing streak in school history, a mark that has been reached three
times in the 39-year history of the program.
Coach Griffith Goes
Green
The Big Green welcome WNBA all-star Yolanda Griffith to its
staff this season. The seven-time WNBA All-Star led the Sacramento Monarchs to
the 2005 WNBA Championship and also won gold medals with the US Olympic Team in
2000 (Sydney) and 2004 (Athens). Griffith played her collegiate basketball at Palm
Beach Junior College and transferred to Florida Atlantic where she earned Kodak
Division II Player of the Year honors in 1993.
Ivy League Preseason
Poll Announced
After a 2010-11 season plagued with injury and
the graduation of Brittany Smith, the Ivy League media and sports information
directors picked Dartmouth to finish in sixth place in the league. The Big
Green has finished lower than third only four times since 1993-94 and just 10
times in the 35 years.
