HANOVER, N.H. — Yale forward Greg Mangano had a career-high 30 points plus 11 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season to lead the visiting Bulldogs (12-10, 5-3 Ivy) past Dartmouth (5-17, 1-7 Ivy) at Leede Arena on Saturday night, 69-60. The Big Green had a balanced offensive attack with sophomore
Matt LaBove and freshman
Tyler Melville leading the way with nine points apiece as Dartmouth dropped its fifth straight game and 10th in its last 11 contests.
Mangano parlayed 11-of-19 field goals, including a three-pointer, and 7-of-10 at the foul line to produce his 30 points. His 11 field goals amounted to half of Yale's total on the night, with the rest of the team knocking down just 11-of-38. Joining him in double figures were Reggie Wilhite with 13 points and Porter Braswell with 12.
LaBove came off the bench to score his nine points, connecting on 4-of-8, plus was active on the boards with a team-high eight rebounds. The center also handed out two assists and grabbed a personal-best three steals to complete his night. Melville not only scored nine points, he also had six assists, double his previous best mark.
The two teams were for the most part equal in shooting percentage and rebounds, but Yale enjoyed a sizable advantage at the foul line with a much bigger lineup. The Bulldogs sank 21-of-27 free throws, while Dartmouth went to the line just nine times, converting seven for an identical 77.8 percent.
Yale never trailed in the contest, yet never led by more than 11 points. Mangano drilled his three-pointer early in the game, giving the Bulldogs a six-point edge at 14-8. But a Melville jumper and a triple from the left baseline by junior
Kirk Crecco pulled the Big Green back within one nine minutes into the game.
Mangano and Morgan each had a basket in the lane before LaBove snared one of his steals and pushed the ball ahead to sophomore
R.J. Griffin, who delighted the crowd of 982 with a two-hand jam. Mangano provided the next four points to give the Elis their largest lead of the opening half at seven, 22-15.
Dartmouth ran off seven straight points to tie the game with Melville getting into the lane for a short jumper, freshman
Nick Jackson blocking a shot and finishing off a fast break with a finger roll, and LaBove pulling down an offensive rebound and converting it into a three-point play.
The tie score did not last long as Braswell came right back with a three-pointer. Although LaBove corralled his own blocked shot and scored on the putback, Mangano capped the half with a dunk of his own, giving Yale a slim 27-24 advantage at the break. Mangano nearly had his double-double when the whistled sounded, tallying 15 points and seven rebounds over the first 20 minutes.
Senior
Clive Weeden scored the first points of the second stanza with a 17-footer, but a layup by Willhite and a trifecta by Morgan boosted the Bulldogs to a six-point lead. Dartmouth could not make it a one-possession game the rest of the night.
The difference remained between five and nine points for more than nine minutes before Mangano canned a pair of free throws with 8:52 remaining to make the score 48-37. Melville immediately drove the lane and scored on a layup to bring the deficit back into single digits, only to have Yale convert 1-of-2 at the line twice.
Junior
Jabari Trotter sank a 16-footer, and the next time down the court, freshman
Kevin Mulquin tapped in a miss to cut the lead down to seven again, 50-43. The two sides then traded buckets for the next five minutes, then Mangano again popped the lead back to 11 with 1:58 to play with a short jumper, 60-49. The Bulldogs finished the game off at the line, hitting 7-of-9 in the final two minutes.
Dartmouth will play its next four games on the road, beginning with a Friday night tilt at Columbia at 7 p.m. Yale returns home for the next two weekends, playing host to league-leader Princeton next Friday at 7 p.m.
