HANOVER, N.H. – The No. 16 Dartmouth men's hockey team will take to the road this weekend for the last time during the regular season, traveling to Colgate on Friday and Cornell on Saturday. The Big Green is looking to pick up a few more points in an incredibley tight ECAC Hockey race. Dartmouth is currently in third place with 24 points with Cornell right behind in fourth place with 22 points. Colgate sits in 12th with six points.
The Big Green comes into the weekend with a 15-7-3 overall record, 11-5-2 in the ECAC. Dartmouth swept last weekend with a 3-1 win over Quinnipiac and a 4-1 win over Princeton. Junior goalie James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) was stellar in net and earned his third weekly award after making 50 saves and racking up a 1.00 goals against average.
Senior Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) continues to lead the Big Green in scoring with 24 points. Rookie Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) tallied his first multiple-point goal game last weekend and is now second on the team with 21 points. Junior Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) is right at 20 points and leads the team with 14 assists.
On Friday, Dartmouth and Colgate square off at Starr Rink at 7 p.m. The Raiders come into the game after having snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over Clarkson on Feb. 5. Last weekend the Raiders defeated Rensselaer in overtime to win their first OT game of the season. Colgate has gone to overtime seven times in 2010-11. Four players have amassed 20 or more points with Francois Brisebois leading the team with 25 points. Austin Smith is right behind him with 24. Kurtis Bartliff and Brian Day have added 21 and 20 points, respectively. In goal Alex Evin and Eric Mihalik have played the majority of minutes for Colgate. Evin has made 16 appearances and has a 3-10-1 record while Evin has played in 13 games and is 2-10-1. Evin leads in save percentage at .891 but Mihalik has the lowest goals against average at 3.10.
Dartmouth leads the overall series with Colgate, 42-39-5 since the two teams began meeting in 1929. With a 4-3 overtime non-conference win in Late December and a 7-3 win in Thompson Arena on Jan. 29, the Big Green is 5-3-2 against the Raiders in the last ten meetings.
On Saturday at Lynah Rink it will be Dartmouth taking on Cornell at 7 p.m. The Big Red has won or tied ten of its last 12 contests after having a six-game unbeaten streak snapped at Union last weekend. In its two games last week the Big Red split with Union and Rensselaer. Two players have recorded over 20 points with Greg Miller leading the way with 22 points. Joe Devin is second with 21 points. Eight total players are scoring in double-figures. In goal two players have split time with freshman Andy Iles playing in 14 games and junior Mike Garman in 13. Garman has a .919 save percentage while Iles is at .917. The Big Red freshman currently has a 2.32 goals against average while Garman has a 2.33 GAA. Iles has won seven games, Garman has won five.
One of Dartmouth's oldest rivals, the two schools have been meeting since Feb. 5, 1909 when the Big Green won, 1-0. Cornell holds a pretty decided advantage in the series at 72-32-3. In the last ten meetings the Big Red is 6-3-1 with the two sides tying, 2-2 on Jan. 28.
Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend with the last home series of the regular season against St. Lawrence and Clarkson. It will be senior weekend as the Big Green will have nine seniors will be playing some of their games in Thompson Arena.
