HANOVER, N.H. — After all the snow was plowed off of Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team still couldn't find its footing in a 13-8 loss to Colgate. It was the Big Green's season and home opener and the third game of the season for the Raiders. Dartmouth dropped to 0-1, and Colgate improved to 1-2.
The Big Green's Rhett Miller (Dallas, Texas) scored the first goal of the contest, but it would be the only lead Dartmouth would have in the game. Colgate scored the next three goals, including two goals in a six-second span. Freshman Brendan Rotanz brought Dartmouth within one after the first period on his first career goal.
The Raiders dominated the second and third periods outscoring the Big Green, 7-2, to take a 10-4 lead heading into the fourth. Dartmouth went on a run to close the gap to start the fourth, scoring three straight goals in just under two minutes. Sophomore Chris Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) scored two of the goals and junior Alex Del Balso (Huntington, N.Y.) scored the third. Unfortunately, Colgate responded by adding three more goals in the final nine minutes to secure the win.
Miller led the team with four points on three goals and one assist. Costabile had three points on three goals. Junior Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) made seven saves in the loss.
The Big Green go out on the road next weekend to play at Sacred Heart on Saturday at 12 p.m. and play against Mercer in Darien, Conn. on Sunday at 1 p.m.
