Spring Trip to Florida
• While 18 of the first 19 Big Green games are outside of Hanover, 10 of those contests come during the spring trip to Florida as part of the RussMat Central Florida Invitational, beginning with the Akron Zips on Thursday afternoon.
• Dartmouth enjoyed one of its best spring trips in recent memory last year, going 5-6 down in Florida with wins over Bradley, Northwestern and Bethune-Cookman.
• Dartmouth lost its season opener in the first of three games at UCF during the first weekend of March. The Big Green were down just 3-2 in the eighth before the host Knights exploded for six runs to win handily, 9-2.
• Dartmouth is now 11-11 in season openers under head coach Bob Whalen.
• The next day, Dartmouth was shut out for the first time in 30 games in an 8-0 blanking. Right-hander Kyle Hendricks took the loss despite allowing just two runs over five innings of work.
• The Big Green blew a late lead, then rallied to win in extra innings in the series finale. UCF scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-5 lead, only to have Jeff Onstott double home the tying run with two outs in the ninth. Dartmouth scored twice in the 10th with two gone to make a winner out of reliever Michael Johnson.
• Dartmouth entered the season with an all-time record at nine games under .500 (1,758-1,767-24). The Big Green would like to at least even that mark out before the season expires.
• Of the six All-Ivy performers for Dartmouth in 2009, each one returns this season — second-teamers Jason Brooks (1B), Joe Sclafani (SS), Jake Carlson (OF) and Cole Sulser (RP), and honorable-mention choices Kyle Hendricks (P) and Chris O'Dowd (C).
• Last year's captain, 2010 graduate Robert Young, signed with the Chicago White Sox after getting drafted in the 31st round.
• Dartmouth features three players on the roster that were drafted out of high school — junior pitcher Kyle Hendricks (39th round), sophomore catcher Chris O'Dowd (40th round) and freshman pitcher Mitch Horacek (46th round).
Quick Scouting Report of Akron
• The Zips have gotten off to a bit of a rough start, winning just three of their first 14 games.
• Part of the reason for the slow start is the competition. Two of the losses came at Mississippi State and three more at Texas State, both of which are receiving votes in the polls.
• As a team, Akron is hitting a woeful .198 and has scored just 27 runs. Only center fielder Drew Turocy is hitting above .290 at .333 with two of the team's six homers
• The top three starters have put up solid numbers, including Andrew Brown who just tossed a shutout against North Dakota State on Wednesday. The Big Green will face right-hander Alex Loftin (1-3, 3.80).
Quick Scouting Report of Army
• Like Akron, Army has had a rough go of it early with a 3-10 record, but did end a nine-game skid with a 14-9 victory over Ohio State followed by a 10-9 triumph over Massachusetts.
• Offense has been a problem for the Black Knights as well, hitting just .231 as a team. Zach Price (.318/.474/.386) and Clint Moore (.273/.419/.515) have been the most productive hitters with Price scoring 10 runs and Moore driving in 11.
• Left-hander Logan Lee (1-3, 3.86), who Dartmouth will likely face, has been the ace of the pitching staff that sports a 6.71 ERA. He leads the team in innings (21.0) and strikeouts (18), but opponents are hitting .325 against him.
• The defense has been a bit shaky with 23 errors, but they have led to just nine unearned runs. Fourteen of those miscues have come from the starting infield.
Quick Scouting Report of Indiana
• The Hoosiers are off to a solid start at 11-5 with four straight wins headed into Thursday's action. Two of the 11 victories have come against ranked teams (Coastal Carolina and Connecticut).
• Five players have produced most of the offense, led by Alex Dickerson (.350/.420/.500) with two bombs and 13 RBIs. Aside from those five players, the rest of the team has hit just .220.
• The team ERA is a quality 3.29 led by Chad Martin (1-0, 1.23) and Blake Monar (2-1, 2.22), while three others all have an ERA below 2.70. Opponents are hitting just .245 against the Hoosier staff.
• Indiana has committed fewer than one error per game (14 in 16 contests), eight of which have come from the double-play combination.
Quick Scouting Report of LIU
• Long Island has nearly half its win total from a year ago (14) with a 6-6 record, including a pair of victories at Kansas State last weekend.
• Catcher Tyler Jones (.432/.519/.568) has been a terror at the plate, leading an offense that has scored more than 5.5 runs a game.
• The pitching has been a bit suspect with a 7.24 ERA, but sophomore right-hander Justin Topa (3-1, 2.70) has been terrific having struck out 19 in 20 innings and walking just four.
• The Blackbirds have shown a tendency to kick the ball around a bit, however, with 25 errors thus far.
Quick Scouting Report of NU
• Northwestern is 4-7 before heading down to Florida for just four games before moving up the coast to the state of North Carolina for five games.
• The Wildcat bats have averaged five runs a game with center fielder Trevor Stevens (.447/.542/.605) at the forefront.
• Luke Farrell (2-0, 2.87) and Francis Brooke (0-2, 3.94) have provided a 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation, although opponents are hitting .377 against Brooke.
• The defense up the middle has been solid, but overall the Wildcats have 18 errors and 13 unearned runs.
Four Games with UMBC
• The Big Green will play UMBC four times in Florida, the first-ever games between the two schools on the diamond.
• The Retrievers enter the state with a record of 1-7 with the lone win coming against Fairfield.
• First baseman Max Himmelstein is hitting .393 but has not walked in 30 plate appearances. UMBC is hitting .270 but scoring just four runs a game.
• Opponents are hitting .331 against Retriever pitchers, who sport a 7.38 ERA. Every starter has an ERA over six, but relievers Sean Swetnam (2.00) and Luke Diblasi (3.24) have fared well in 17.1 innings combined.
• The defense needs to be shored up, however, with a whopping 21 errors in eight games. Opponents have averaged more than two unearned runs scored per game.
Probable Starting Pitchers
• Sophomore LHP Kyle Hunter (0-1, 5.40 ERA) is coming off his first collegiate loss after escaping unscathed in nine starts as a freshman. He battled through five innings at UCF, allowing 10 base runners but only three runs.
• Scheduled to take the mound for the Army game is junior RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-1, 3.60) who deserved a better fate than his loss after yielding two runs in five innings against the Knights.
• The rest of the rotation is up in the air, but Big Green fans should not be surprised to see junior RHP Cole Sulser (0-0, 7.20) or sophomore LHP Michael Johnson (1-0, 0.00), the latter of which earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief down in Orlando two weeks ago.
What's Up Next
Dartmouth also has a contest against Grinnell after the UMBC series before returning to Hanover for its home opener on March 30 against Siena and All-American Dan Paolini. The grounds crew is already working hard to clear the field of snow in preparation for the game.
