HANOVER, N.H. — The New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) announced its 2011 All-Star Teams for both the University and College Divisions yesterday, and three Dartmouth student-athletes were honored with their inclusion. Sophomores
Ennis Coble and
Chris O'Dowd were chosen for the University Division First Team, while junior
Joe Sclafani was selected for the Second Team.
Coble, a native of Atlanta, Ga., was named to the first team as a designated hitter after leading the Ivy League with 40 RBIs, and finishing third with a .361 average and 14 doubles. A second-team All-Ivy selection as a utility player, Coble also was fourth in on-base percentage (.438), sixth in triples (3), and eighth in hits (53) and total bases (76). In addition, he led the Big Green with nine stolen bases.
Earning his first-team spot at catcher was O'Dowd, from Cherry Hills Village, Colo., and the son of Colorado Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd. The switch-hitter belted a team-best seven home runs (tied for third in the Ivy League) and led the loop with 49 runs scored while placing among the conference's top 10 with a .329 average. His 90 total bases and 21 walks were good for fourth in the league, while he also finished among the top 10 in hits (53), triples (4), on-base percentage (.422) and slugging (.559). O'Dowd was also named honorable mention All-Ivy for the second straight year this spring.
Sclafani, a shortstop from Palm City, Fla., has been an All-Ivy honoree in each of his three seasons at Dartmouth, twice making the first team, but is making his first appearance on one of the NEIBA teams. The switch-hitter provided plenty of pop at the plate with a .349 batting average (sixth in the league) and a .581 slugging percentage (fourth). He led the conference in hits with 60 and triples — setting a school record with eight — is second with 46 runs scored and 100 total bases, fifth with 12 doubles and 34 RBIs, seventh with 19 walks and 10th with a .414 on-base percentage. Defensively Sclafani recorded the most assists in the conference with 132 and was a part of 22 double plays.
As members of either the first or second team, the trio will be on the roster for the 37th Annual NEIBA All-Star Game on Thursday, June 2 at 7 p.m. at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass., home of the Lowell Spinners. With several players unavailable to participate due to NCAA Regionals and other commitments, three other Dartmouth players were added to the roster, each of whom garnered All-Ivy honors this spring — junior right-hander
Kyle Hendricks, senior second baseman
Jeff Onstott and senior reliever
Ryan Smith.
The gate will open one hour before game time and tickets will cost five dollars. For directions and other information, please visit the official website of the
