NEW HAVEN, CONN. — After the first day of the Men's Ivy League Heptagonal Championship hosted by Yale, the Dartmouth men's track and field team sits in third place with 26 points. Senior David Irving (Manchester, N.H.) led the Big Green with two top-three finishes.
Irving took home a second-place finish in the hammer throw and a third in the shot put. The finish in the hammer earned Irving second-team All-Ivy Honors. In the hammer, he had a mark of 60.39 meters (198-01.00 feet), and had a throw of 16.61 meters (54-06.00 feet) in the shot put. Dartmouth had two other athletes finish in the top ten in the hammer. Junior Nick Resendes (Warwick, R.I.) finished eighth at 50.18 meters (164-07.00 feet), and freshman Dom Filiano (Lebanon, N.H.) placed 10th at 46.66 meters (153-01.00 feet). Filiano also took eighth in the shot put at 16.20 meters (53-01.75 feet).
Dartmouth had three competitors finish in the top six in the javelin. Senior Chris Roe (Berwyn, Pa.) placed third at 64.15 meters (210-05.00 feet), senior Dan Ostrovsky (Wellesley, Mass.) finished fifth at 61.76 meters (202-07.00 feet) and sophomore Brett Gilson (Richboro, Pa.) took sixth with a throw of 60.42 meters (198-03.00 feet).
Freshman Josh Cyphers (Grantham, N.H.) placed fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.65 meters (15-03.00 feet). In the only running finals of the day, junior Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) took sixth in the 10,000 meters at 30:44.56.
In the long jump, freshman Jeremy Thibodeau (Rigaud, Ont.) finished ninth with a jump of 6.77 meters (22-02.50 feet).
Junior Rob Contuzzi (Northampton, Mass.) is third in the decathlon through five events with 3519 points. He moved into third in the competition by having the best mark in the high jump.
The Big Green had multiple athletes compete and qualify for finals on Sunday. In the 1,500 meters, freshman Steve Mangan (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) qualified at 3:59.92 and senior Tom Robbins (Evanston, Ill) qualified at 5:50.18. Sophomore Jacob Evanter (Marblehead, Mass.) reached the finals in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line at 15.26. In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Joe Lonek (Epping, N.H.) qualified at 55.09.
The Heptagonals continue on Sunday, starting at 10:30 a.m.
