Starting Five
1. Dartmouth is looking to even its Ivy League record on
Friday when it takes on Brown. Dartmouth dropped a 71-63 contest to rival,
Harvard, in its Ivy League opener on Jan. 14. Should the Big Green defeat Yale, Dartmouth
will be 2-1 in Ivy League action for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
2. The Big Green is looking to avenge series sweeps from Brown and Yale last season. Brown swept Dartmouth for the first time since the 1992-93 season. Prior to the 2009-10 season, Yale hadn't swept the Big Green since 1997-98.
3. Dartmouth is looking to snap its current 11-game losing streak, which is the longest of the season to date and is currently the longest losing streak in program history. Prior to Dartmouth's current streak the longest losing streak was seven games and that was during the 1984-85 and 2000-01 seasons.
4. Freshman guard Milica Toskovic picked up her first Ivy League Rookie of the Week award after recording 14 points against Longwood, her third straight game in double figures. It marked the second consecutive week a Dartmouth player was named co-Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
5. Dartmouth is looking for its first home win of the season. The Big Green are 0-6 at home and haven't been winless in Leede Arena this late in the season since the 1992-93 season, when they opened the home slate 0-5.
Dartmouth vs. Brown Notables
-Dartmouth and Brown are meeting for the 70th time in
Friday's contest. The Big Green hold a 48-21 record against the Bears, and
despite dropping the season series last year, had won nine straight over the
Bears.
-The Big Green and Bears have taken on similar opponents in non-conference action. Both teams played New Hampshire, Bryant, Providence, Vermont and Holy Cross. Both teams lost to New Hampshire and Bryant while they both defeated Vermont. Brown also defeated Providence and Holy Cross.
Dartmouth vs. Yale
Notables
-Dartmouth and Yale are meeting for the 69th time in
Sunday's game. The Big Green owns a 50-18 series advantage but Yale has swept
the Big Green in each of the last two seasons.
-The Big Green and Bulldogs each have players from Michigan. Dartmouth's Faziah Steen and Yale's Arrice Bryant both come from Detroit. Steen, a junior, played her high school basketball at Detroit Country Day while Bryant, a freshman, played at Renaissance high school.
A Win Would ...
1. Snap Dartmouth's current 11-game losing streak and give
the Big Green its first win at Leede Arena this season. Dartmouth is 0-6 at
Leede Arena this season and 0-1 at home against Ivy League opponents with a
loss to Harvard (Jan. 14).
2. Wins over both Brown and Yale, would snap losing streaks to both squads for the Big Green. Yale has won the last four meetings against Dartmouth while Brown has won the last two games.
3. Give the Big Green a chance to move to 2-1 in Ivy League action. Should Dartmouth win both games this weekend it would be the first weekend sweep since defeating Columbia and Cornell at home last season.
Scouting Brown
Brown enters this weekend with a 10-6, 1-1 Ivy League record
after picking up a 60-55 win over Yale in New Haven, Conn., on Friday (Jan.
20). The Bears are winners of six of their last eight games. The Bears are
looking for their third consecutive win over the Big Green after a season sweep
last season. Prior to last season's series, Dartmouth had won nine consecutive
over the Bears with its last loss coming during the 2005-06 season in Providence,
R.I. Brown is led by two players in double figures with Sheila Dixon leading
the way with 13.8 points per game and a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game. Hannah
Passafuime is also in double figures with 12.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per
game. The Bears have a pretty solid lineup and have started Dixon, Passafuime,
Lindsay Nickel, Lauren Clarke and Aileen Daniels each game this season. Both
teams defeated Vermont and fell to New Hampshire. Head coach Jean Marie Burr is
in her 24th season at Brown.
Scouting Yale
Yale enters Sunday's contest with a 9-7, 1-1* Ivy League
record after dropping a 60-55 contest to Brown on Friday (Jan. 20). The
Bulldogs have won four of their last five games and sport a 4-5* road record
this season. Megan Vasquez leads the Bulldog offense and is averaging 14.2
points per game. Janna Graf is averaging 10.1 points per game and is Yale's
best rebounder pulling down 5.7 rebounds per game. Three-time Ivy League Rookie
of the Week, Sarah Halejian is also nearing double figures with 8.9 points per
game. The Big Green and Yale have taken on one common opponent in
non-conference action in Holy Cross. The Bulldogs opened the season with the
Crusaders winning, 76-71, back on Nov. 11 while the Big Green opened the New
Year with Holy Cross, dropping a 65-63 contest in Worcester, Mass. Dartmouth is
looking to snap a four-game skid to the Bulldogs, as Yale has swept them in
each of the last two seasons. Dartmouth last defeated Yale during the 2008-09
season. Head coach Chris Gobrecht is in her seventh year roaming the Yale
sideline. *Yale will take on Harvard on Friday night. All stats are prior to
the Harvard game.
Toskovic
Named Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week
Freshman guard Milica Toskovic
(Santa Monica, Calif.) was named Ivy League co-Rookie of the Week for her 14
points against Longwood (Jan. 21). Her 14 points was her third consecutive game
in double figures and her fourth in Dartmouth's last five games. Toskovic's
selection marks the second consecutive week a Big Green player has been named
Rookie of the Week. Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has also won the award for
Dartmouth.
Steen
Earns Spot on Ivy League Honor Roll
Junior guard Faziah Steen
(Detroit, Mich.) was named to the Ivy League honor roll for the third time this
season and for the second consecutive week for her 29 points, four rebounds and
four assists against Longwood. It was Steen's second consecutive game with 20
or more points and her eighth straight game in double figures.
Big
Green Players with Career Highs vs. Longwood
Several Dartmouth players hit
career milestones against Longwood. Freshman center Tia Dawson hit a career
high 12 points for her second consecutive game in double figures while teammate
Arianne Hunter set career highs in minutes (30), blocks (2) and steals (2).
Hunter's 30 minutes against Longwood was more than double her average of 10.5
minutes entering the game.
Steen
Leads the Big Green Machine
Junior guard Faziah Steen has
been quite effective on the offensive end of things this season. Her 29 points
against Longwood marked her third game of 20 or more points and was her eighth
consecutive game in double figures and her 12th game this season. Steen has
been Dartmouth's leading scorer in 13 of 15 games this season and has been in
double figure in 21 of Dartmouth's last 25 games dating back to last season.
1,000 Point Watch
Junior guard Faziah Steen is racing up Dartmouth's all-time
scoring charts and is 170 points away from becoming Dartmouth's 16th
1,000-point scorer. In order to reach that milestone this season, she will need
to average 13.0 points per game over Dartmouth's remaining 13 contests. Steen,
who entered the season with an 11.2 career scoring average, has scored over 200
points in each of her seasons at Dartmouth and with her 237 points, midway
through this season, she is set for her highest scoring season to date.
