ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell right-hander Connor Kaufmann hurled a seven-inning, complete-game no-hitter against the visiting Dartmouth Big Green on an overcast, drizzly Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field as the Big Red claimed a 2-0 victory. It was the first no-hitter for Cornell (15-5-1, 2-1 Ivy) in 23 years as Dartmouth (4-12, 1-2 Ivy) was shut out for the second time in the last three games. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed until Monday at noon due to the rain.
Kaufmann (4-1) faced the minimum 21 batters in the contest despite walking two batters, both of which were erased on the basepaths. He needed just 80 pitches to complete the seven innings, retiring the final 17 hitters of the game while striking out four.
Senior
Joe Sclafani drew a walk leading off the game, but on a hit-and-run with one down, junior
Ennis Coble drilled a shot directly at right fielder Chris Cruz, who easily doubled up Sclafani at first. In the second, Kaufmann walked sophomore
Dustin Selzer to start the stanza, who was erased at second on an attempted sacrifice bunt. One out later, Kaufmann picked the runner off first to end the inning. Dartmouth would not have another runner reach base the rest of the afternoon.
Big Green sophomore left-hander
Mitch Horacek, meanwhile, was pitching quite well himself. But after setting down the first five Big Red hitters of the game, Brandon Lee boomed a double to center field, took third on a wild pitch and scored when Ben Swinford poked a single through the left side for a 1-0 lead.
In the third, J.D. Whetsel smacked a one-out triple, but was left stranded at third by Horacek who got a grounder to short with the infield pulled in and a strikeout to end the inning.
Frank Hager provided an insurance run in the fourth by blasting his first home run of the season, a two-out solo shot just inside the left-field foul pole on a full-count pitch.
Horacek (1-2) suffered the loss, surrendering the two runs on just four hits and three walks while fanning five.
