BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Wyatt Omsberg scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute to give the Dartmouth men's soccer team a 2-1 (2OT) win over Vermont on Wednesday afternoon at Virtue Field.
Dartmouth improves its record to 4-2-1 and is currently riding a five-game unbeaten streak heading into the Ivy League opener this weekend. Vermont falls to 5-4-1 this season.
Midway through the second overtime, the Big Green put pressure on the Catamount defense, which forced a corner kick with 5:39 remaining in the contest. Senior Robin Alnas' volley found the head of freshman Jonathan Nierenberg who shuttled the ball over to Omsberg for the game-winner to the back post.
“We played with a different lineup today than we usually do,” said head coach Chad Riley. “Composure wins games and finishes play and I think we had that today.”
The Big Green's starting lineup featured nine fresh faces; with seniors Hugh Danilack and Nick Rooney as the only two with more than a pair of starts this season.
Sophomore James Hickok also made his first start of the season and made three saves. Hickok's other two appearances came in relief during the opening weekend games at Notre Dame.
The Big Green finished the contest with an 8-7 advantage in shots and also owned the set pieces, 8-1.
Neither team scored in the first half, as Vermont keeper Ryan Bailey made three of his four stops in the opening 45 minutes. Seniors Stefan Defregger and Eric Jayne had back-to-back shots on goal in the 28th and 31st minutes, respectively. The final Dartmouth attempt of the stanza came with 52 seconds left by Rooney.
In the second frame, Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute on a blast by freshman Matt Danilack that deflected off a Vermont defender for his second goal of the season. The goal was set up but no assist was credited to Defregger on a corner kick taken seconds before the goal.
“Today's game was a testament to the squad. James played solid for us in the cage, as did Wyatt and Matt Danilack scoring both goals,” Riley commented.
In the 74th minute, it was Defregger coming in on a semi-breakaway but Bailey's save shifted the play back into Big Green defensive-third where Brian Wright tied the game seconds later. Wright's sixth of the season came off a one-touch after a pass by Bernard Yeboah.
In the 79th minute, Dartmouth had a chance to take the lead but senior Alex Adelabu's attempt rang off the post to keep the game knotted at one.
Just like the first half, neither team made an offensive push, nor was a shot taken by either side in the opening 10 minutes of overtime.
In the final period, Yeboah had Vermont's only shot, but it sailed high over Hickok. In the 104th minute, a Vermont player was shown a yellow card that prompted Alnas' corner and the game-clincher by Omsberg.
Dartmouth will begin Ivy League play on Saturday afternoon at Princeton at 4 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
