ANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team opened its 2014-15 regular season in a big way Sunday afternoon against in-state rival New Hampshire, rolling to a 6-2 victory at Thompson Arena.
The Big Green are 1-0-0 after the season-opening triumph. The Wildcats dipped to 2-6-1 overall in 2014.
Junior Lindsay Allen and sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit led the team with two goals apiece, while sophomore Robyn Chemago became the first Dartmouth goalie to be credited with an assist since the 2008-09 season.
“I am really happy with the overall effort,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “For our first game, I thought we played a solid 60 minutes.”
Of the six goals tallied by the home team, four came on the power play. Dartmouth was 4-for-5 with the extra skater, a major plus moving forward for a team just beginning play in 2014-15.
Ottenbreit opened scoring at 6:17, netting the only goal of the first period with the help of junior Laura Stacey and sophomore Eleni Tebano.
Allen and senior captain Karlee Odland would pocket their first goals of the season at 6:10 and 16:42, respectively, in the second stanza, giving the Green a 3-0 lead before New Hampshire's Kayla Mork was able to get the Wildcats on the board just a minute later.
The third period was an eventful one, with four goals coming in a span of less than 10 minutes. Ottenbreit's second goal of the game came eight minutes in and was followed shortly after by UNH's Kate Haslett scoring the opponent's second and final goal at 10:33.
After having a hand in two of Dartmouth's four goals, Stacey netted one of her own at 13:08, with junior Olivia Whitford and Chemago earning the helpers. Stacey skated with the puck starting from behind her own net, before slipping a backhander through the goaltender's arm at the other end. The last Dartmouth goaltender to be credited with an assist was Carli Clemis during a 2-2 tie against Clarkson on Nov. 15, 2008.
With less than two and a half minutes remaining in the game, Allen found the back of the net once more, knocking home a loose puck at the top of the crease on the power play.
The Big Green's power play was one of the major storylines of the game, while their penalty kill held the Wildcats to 0-for-2 with the man-advantage. Dartmouth outshot New Hampshire, 30-24 and, between the pipes, Chemago had 22 saves, while Vilma Vaattovaara had 24 on the other end of the rink.
Dartmouth returns to action on Friday, Oct. 31 when it begins ECAC Hockey play against Union at Thompson Arena with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
