PRINCETON, N.J. – For the Dartmouth women's cross country team, there was no title hangover.
The Big Green captured their second straight Ivy League Heptagonal Championship win Saturday at Princeton's West Windsor Field 6K course, led by second-place finisher Dana Giordano (20:28.1).
Dartmouth's victory marked the sixth Ivy League crown in program history after winning four straight between 1994-97 and again last year in 2013.
First-year head coach Courtney Jaworski guided his team to the win with 47 points, besting the field of seven other Ivy programs. Second-place Princeton had 67 and had the top individual finisher in sophomore Megan Curham (20:24.3)
The depth and talent of the Big Green was on full display Saturday morning as senior Sarah B. Delozier (20:36.1) was the third overall finisher, crossing just behind Giordano and giving Dartmouth a solid five points to start their scoring and two First Team All-Ivy League runners.
“I am so proud of this team,” Jaworski said. “They stuck to our strategy perfectly and turned a plan into a championship result. Everyone who stepped up to the line today did what was asked of them and were rewarded for their hard work.”
Though Princeton would place three in the top-10 to Dartmouth's two, the Green and White had all its scoring runners in the first 17 finishers, giving them an insurmountable lead on the cold and wet morning in New Jersey.
Juniors Sarah Bennett (21:14.3) and Reid Watson (21:15.3) were 12th and 13th, respectively, earning Second-Team All-Ivy honors in the process. Freshman Ellie Gonzalez was the final Dartmouth runner to earn points, crossing 17th in 21:17.8.
Seniors Claudia Pham (20th, 21:26.2) and Alison Lanois (24th, 21:228.2) and sophomore Helen Schlachtenhaufen (32nd, 21:33.9) also posted strong showings for the Big Green on Saturday, furthering the team's championship efforts.
