HANOVER, N.H. – At its first two-game weekend of the year and the day after shutting out Union, the Dartmouth women's hockey team defeated RPI by a score of 5-2 in Thompson Arena on Saturday.
The Big Green improved to 3-0-0 and 2-0-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Engineers fell to 1-6-2 and are 0-2-0 in conference play.
Junior Laura Stacey had the first and last Big Green goals, while classmate Catherine Berghuis had two assists and a goal of her own to lead the team with three points. Sophomore Ailish Forfar also had an eventful evening, having a hand in two of the five markers.
“We had another good effort tonight,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “There was a little bit of a lull in the second period after we took the two penalties, but we rebounded really well coming out for the third. Overall, it was a good weekend for us.”
Five minutes after Stacey's goal, with both teams deep in Green territory, Berghuis intercepted a pass meant for a player in red, thrusting her stick out just in time to redirect the puck to a waiting Katy Ratty, who was in the right place at the right time. The Big Green sophomore sped down the ice with everyone in hot pursuit, heading directly for the lone RPI defender that stood to the right of the goalie. Ratty was able to slip the puck past both to find the top left corner of the net.
After having a safe 2-0 lead heading into the second period, things soon became interesting, with a combined three markers occurring in a seven-minute span. RPI's first goal of the game came at 7:32, an unassisted shot by Mariana Walsh that was pushed just past sophomore Robyn Chemago.
At 13:04, a quick pass between Forfar and fellow sophomore Emma Korbs planted the puck directly in front of goalie Kelly O'Brien, but was picked up by Berghuis and sent flying into the back of the net for the only power play marker of the game. Just under two minutes later at 14:50, Walsh was back in action, taking a shot from the left side of the net once again to get her second goal of the game. With a score of 3-2, the game went into the final stanza.
With the clock at 6:31 in the third period, Forfar took a shot directly outside the cage that bounced off Kelly and landed directly on sophomore Samantha Zeiss' stick, leading to her first goal of the season. With three minutes left in the game, the Engineers pulled their goalie following a time out. Sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit got in the way of an RPI pass, giving the puck to Stacey, who netted her second goal of the game into an empty net.
In net, Chemago recorded 19 saves, while RPI's goalie Kelly O'Brien had 42 saves throughout the entire game. The Green went 1-for-4 with the man advantage, while the Engineers were held to 0-for-3.
The Big Green will hit the road for New York next week, heading to Rochester to face St. Lawrence on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. The following Saturday, Dartmouth will face the Saints again, this time in Canton, N.Y.
