ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Playing its first road contest of the 2014-15 season, the Dartmouth women's hockey team defeated ECAC Hockey rival, St. Lawrence by a score of 5-1 in front of a crowd of 2,000 fans at a non-conference, neutral-site game on a wintry Saturday evening in the Empire State. The Big Green remains undefeated with a record of 4-0-0, while the Saints dipped to 4-5-1.
Junior Lindsey Allen had a big night, scoring Dartmouth's final three goals. Senior Karlee Odland had a goal and an assist and classmate Samantha Zeiss recorded two helpers. In net, sophomore Robyn Chemago stopped 28 of the 29 shots.
“Overall, we had a good game,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “We made some mistakes, but were able to recover well. Robyn played a really strong game in net when we needed her.
Dartmouth wasted no time, netting the first goal at 2:16 when senior Karlee Odland had a dump-in from center ice to gain the offensive zone, passing to classmate Samantha Zeiss, who had a quick feed behind the net to the high slot area, giving sophomore Ailish Forfar her first goal of the season. The Green almost increased that lead a few minutes later, when junior Laura Stacey took a shot that hit the left pipe. At 11:13, the seniors were back in action, with Zeiss sending the puck to Odland, who pocketed it in the right side of the cage.
The Green's two-goal lead did not last long, as the Saints' Jenna Marks scored the opponent's only mark of the night at 13:22. It was not until 16:18 in the second period that Allen netted her first of three markers to give Dartmouth a comfortable lead heading into the final stanza.
Both teams upped the intensity in the third period, making it impossible for either to find the back of the net. The Saints and the Big Green took a combined 30 shots on goal, with neither being able to get past the talented netminders. With three minutes remaining in the game, St. Lawrence pulled their goalie, allowing Allen to score her second goal of the game at 17:48. The Saints' Mikaela Thompson returned to her position between the pipes, only to be taken out once again a few seconds later. At 18:35, less than a minute after the fourth Dartmouth goal, Allen pocketed her third of the night to wrap up the game.
The Green and White outshot the Saints, 35-30. Even though St. Lawrence had four power-play opportunities, it went 0-for-4 with the extra player. Both goalies were kept on their toes; Chemago and Thompson each stopped 29 shots.
The Big Green and the Saints will have just six days until meeting again. Dartmouth will travel to Canton, New York next Friday, Nov. 14 to play in St. Lawrence's home rink at 7 p.m. The following day, the team from the Upper Valley will go down the road to take on Clarkson.
