CANTON, N.Y. – After defeating ECAC Hockey Rival St. Lawrence just six days ago by a score of 5-1, the No. 10 Dartmouth women's hockey team returned to New York on Friday night for a rematch against the Saints. In a very aggressive game that featured a total of 54 shots, the Big Green fell by a score of 2-1, dropping their first game of the 2014-15 season
Dartmouth dipped to 4-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Saints improved to 5-5-1 and 2-2-0 in conference action.
Junior Laura Stacey scored the Green's lone goal of the night, finding the back of the net with just 1:20 left in the third period. This was her fourth marker of the season. Classmate Lindsey Allen led Dartmouth with six shots.
Both teams returned to the ice with the same aggression they showed last weekend and, in the first eight minutes of action, a total of 21 shots were taken, with St. Lawrence outshooting the Big Green 13-8. Following a Dartmouth penalty and three consecutive shots by the Saints, Amanda Boulier opened scoring with her power play goal at 8:52. For the remainder of the period, the Big Green took six shots, with three of them having to be saved by goalie Carmen MacDonald.
The Saints increased their lead to two when Kennedy Marchment slipped the puck past sophomore Robyn Chemago at 15:20 in the second period. St. Lawrence remained comfortable ahead throughout the remainder of the second and the majority of the third stanza until Stacey scored her fourth of the season at 18:40 to lessen the gap. One last shot by sophomore Eleni Tebano with just seconds to go on the clock was blocked, ending the game with a Saints' victory.
Between the pipes, Chemago saved 23-of-25 shots that were sent her way, while MacDonald stopped 27 attempts.
Another big game awaits the Big Green; tomorrow, a battle of the nationally ranked teams will take place at Cheel Arena when Dartmouth faces No. 7 defending national champion Clarkson at 4 p.m.
