POTSDAM, N.Y. – In a battle of the nationally ranked teams, No. 10 Dartmouth women's hockey faced No. 7 defending national champion Clarkson in the Golden Knights' Cheel Arena on a crisp Saturday afternoon in the Empire State. In an aggressive ECAC Hockey match up, the Big Green fell by a score of 3-0.
The team from the Upper Valley dipped to 4-2-0 and 2-2-0 in conference play and wrapped up the weekend with a record of 0-2 after suffering its first loss of the season to St. Lawrence yesterday. Clarkson improved to 9-3-1 and 4-0-1 in league play following a 2-2 tie to Harvard last night.
"We played two good games this weekend," head coach Mark Hudak. "We struggled to capitalize on our chances, but overall, I thought we played well."
Both netminders were kept on their toes during the first period. Clarkson's Shea Tiley saved seven of the nine shots that the Big Green sent her way, while sophomore Robyn Chemago had to stop 9-of-16 attempts. The Golden Knights had their first opportunity at a goal early on when a shot by Cayley Mercer hit the pipe, but rebounded out of harm's way. With just a handful of ticks left on the clock, Mercer was back in action but, this time, was able to find the back of the net, scoring her eighth marker of the season at 19:16.
Although neither team was able to get past the goalies in the second period, there definitely was not a lapse in action during that time. Dartmouth and Clarkson took 16 shots apiece, with nine of them being saved by each minder. The Big Green threatened Tiley many times, with juniors Lindsey Allen and Laura Stacey taking back-to-back shots within a few seconds, but all attempts at a goal were thwarted. Still trailing by one, Dartmouth prepared for the third stanza.
Less shots were taken in the third, with Dartmouth outshooting the host, 13-9, and it was not until the last few minutes of the game that the aggression was turned up. At 16:42, Shannon MacAulay pocketed the Golden Knights' second goal of the game and, with just 17 seconds remaining, scored another to give Clarkson a 3-0 lead to last until the end.
The Golden Knights outshot the Big Green, 28-24. Allen and Stacey led Dartmouth with seven and five shots, respectively. Between the pipes, Chemago stopped 25 shots, while Tiley had 24 saves.
Dartmouth will have a two-week break from the ice and will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 29 when it hosts Boston University at 12 p.m.
