NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The tenth-ranked Dartmouth women's squash team completed its second upset of the weekend as this time the Big Green knocked off eighth-ranked George Washington, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Yale's Brady Squash Courts.
Dartmouth (3-5) got some outstanding play today from seniors Sarah Caughey and Helena Darling, junior Lydie McKenzie and freshmen Rebecca Brownell and Zainab Molani who all picked up wins for the team.
"This weekend was good for Dartmouth Women's squash,” head coach Hansi Wiens said. “It gives us a great chance to reach the top eight in the country and to play for the national championship.”
In the first round, McKenzie opened play with a superb four-game victory while sophomore Madeline Fraser and senior Oona Morris lost two heart-breaking five-set matches.
In the middle frame, Caughey and Brownell put Dartmouth back into the match with two quick three-game wins. Junior Tori Dewey played well but came up against strong resistance, losing in four games.
With three games yet to play, the contest was tied at three-all. Dartmouth's number one sophomore Jacqueline Barnes lost in three games shortly before Molani secured her match in four games setting up a crucial final match which was poised at one game each.
Darling was in the middle of the third game when she played a counter drop shot which sent her opponent backwards before falling to the ground. Unfortunately, the George Washington player could no longer continue which secured the match for Dartmouth.
Sophomore Hanna Balcha won the exhibition contest in five games after almost allowing a 2-0 lead slip away.
Dartmouth welcomes Bates to the Berry Squash Courts next Sunday, Jan. 25 at noon, as the team will play its next four games in Hanover.
