It's The Most Wonderful Time of The Year
One down and 13 to go in the Ivy League calendar. Coming off its 76-61 win against Harvard on Jan. 10, the Big Green sat idle in preparation for their second Ancient Eight contest. Harvard, on the other hand, played its final non-conference game last Saturday, a come-from-behind victory over NJIT, 66-54.
Double-Digit Winners Play In March
After defeating Harvard two weekends ago, the Big Green picked up their 10th win of the season. It's been five years since the team last had double-digit wins when they went 11-17. In the program history, Dartmouth has won 10 or more games in 29-of-38 seasons. Of seven NCAA Tournaments, the Big Green have reached, the team needed at least 17 wins to get into the dance. When the team reached the WNIT in 2007 and 2008, they had 15 wins in each season.
Win Some, Lose Some
Dartmouth is 5-5 over the past 10 Ivy League openers against Harvard. In those previous 10 seasons, the Big Green have reached the NCAA two times and two WNIT berths. In seasons the Big Green advanced to the postseason, they are 3-1 against the Crimson. If you add another year to the scenario, the Big Green are 4-1 in Ancient Eight openers with an extra trip the Big Dance.
So What Happens in Game 2?
Dartmouth is 24-13 all-time in the second game of the Ivy League season. In the years, that Dartmouth has won the Ivy League title, the team is 16–1 …. (16-game winning streak). In the years that Dartmouth made the NCAA Tournament the team is 6–1. In the years that Dartmouth made the WNIT, the team is 2–0. In those other non-postseason years, the team is, 7-12, but did finish above.500 four times.
Top 100 National Rankings
Dartmouth is second in Ivy League RPI and sits at number 92 after jumping five spots during its idle week. Princeton (17-0) is the top dog in the Ivy fight at number 18 and remains as one of the two undefeated teams in the NCAA with South Carolina (18-0).
Winning Streaks By Four
Dartmouth is riding its second four-game winning streak this season after beginning the season 4-0. The last time the squad had two four-game streaks was back in 2007-08, when the Big Green made the WNIT. The first streak started Feb 1 and lasted until Feb 15. The next streak came two games later and through the remainder of the Ivy League season and into the first of two Ivy Playoff matches, that run lasted seven games.
Defense Leads to Offense
Dartmouth leads the Ivy league in defensive rebounds per game at 29.0. On the national scale, the team is 28th overall, with Oregon State leading the way at 32.0 per contest. Not only is the team great at cleaning up the glass, but they are second in the Ivy league in field-goal defense at 35.2, which is 26th nationally. From the outside, opponents are shooting 27.3, which is good enough for second in the Ancient Eight and 34th in the NCAA. Junior Lakin Roland is first in the Ivies with eight defensive caroms a night and 14th in the NCAA.
Roland's 25 Points Lead Big Green In Ivy Opener
Roland led four Big Green players in double figures with 25 points and nine rebounds, as Dartmouth defeated Harvard, 76-61, at Lavietes Pavilion. Milica Toskovic added 15 points on 4-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from the outside. Toskovic also had five rebounds, three assists, one block and one big defensive stop late in the contest. Fanni Szabo contributed 14 points from the Big Green and made key free throws late in the contest for the visitors. Off the bench, Katie Vareika was a spark plug once again connecting on all three from the outside and finished with 11 points.
Non-Conference Completed With Home Win
Sophomore Fanni Szabo led all scorers with 21 points as Dartmouth defeated Oakland, 59-54. Junior Lakin Roland added 13 points and had eight rebounds and six other players netted single-digit points in the win. Dartmouth picked up 17 points off turnovers and had 28 points in the paint.
