PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team concluded its three-game week at Brown on Saturday afternoon, picking up its first Ivy League victory of the season with a 5-1 win at Meehan Auditorium. The Big Green improved to 7-7-1 and 3-6-1 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Bears fell to 4-11-0 and 1-7-0 in conference action.
Dartmouth was led by senior Samantha Zeiss, who scored two goals, and classmate Karlee Odland with two helpers.
"I was disappointed with our play last night against Yale and didn't think we had a very good team game," head coach Mark Hudak said. "I was happy with the way we rebounded today, especially right in the beginning of the game, and I thought the big difference was the effort and the commitment to doing a lot of the little things right."
The first shot of the game, sent by Brown's Sam Donovan, hit the pipe at 1:40 into the first, setting the pace for the rest of the period. At 6:38, after freshman Brooke Ahbe won the faceoff, junior Olivia Whitford got her first tally of the season, firing to the left of the cage and under goalie Julianne Landry's padded hands, which went to save the shot just a second too late. Less than 20 seconds later at 6:55, Zeiss picked up the puck from sophomore Ailish Forfar and Odland directly to the left of the net and slipped it past Landry.
At 17:11, sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit tried what had worked for the first two goals and shot it to the left, but Landry was able to stop it, sending the puck directly to junior Lindsey Allen, who pocketed the puck in the right before the netminder was able to switch sides. With 56 seconds remaining in the period, Sarah Robson got the Bears back in the game with her power play goal, lessening Dartmouth's lead to two.
After a four-goal opening period, the opening minutes of the second were a lot quieter. Brown had its best opportunity at scoring another goal with just over 10 minutes left on the clock when Erin Conway sped down the right side with a lone Dartmouth defender behind her. With one quick sliding motion to the right, sophomore goalie Robyn Chemago was able to deflect the shot.
Although the start was slow, the remainder of the second period was anything but that. At 13:39, following passes from juniors Lindsey Allen and Catherine Berghuis down the middle, sophomore Kennedy Ottenbreit shot once to the right, hit the post, picked up the deflection, and found the back of the net the second time around. Three minutes later, junior Zoe Brennan got the puck meant for a Brown player and gave it to Odland, who perfectly set Zeiss up to score her second marker of the afternoon.
The final period was just as fast-paced and aggressive as the previous two, but both teams' defense prevented any more goals from being scored. With time winding down, the Green and White let loose on Landry, forcing her to make almost 10 saves in the last four minutes of action.
The Green outshot the Bears, 43-15, holding Brown to just seven shots throughout the last 20 minutes of action. Chemago ended the day with 14 saves, while Landry stopped 38 attempts in the loss.
Dartmouth will return to New York for the first time since the start of the season next weekend, facing conference rivals Rensselaer at 7 p.m. on Friday and Union at 4 p.m. the next day.
