PHILADELPHIA – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped a heart-breaking double-overtime game, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Penn.
The game-winning goal came with a minute and 17 seconds remaining in the second overtime period as Elise Tilton found a loose ball all alone in front and knocked home the marker. That goal saw the Quakers' (9-1, 3-0 Ivy) sideline erupt as they won their ninth straight game. The Big Green dropped to 4-6 overall this season and 0-3 against Ivy opponents.
The game only reached overtime thanks to Julia Donald's ninth goal of the season to tie the contest in the 65th minute. It only reached double overtime because Dartmouth goalkeeper Paige Duffy made one of her career-high 13 saves on an Alexa Hoover penalty stroke bid midway through the first extra frame.
Hoover did manage to score her Ivy-League leading 21st goal of the season in the 15th minute as the home team held a 1-0 edge through halftime.
Brooke Van Valkenburg got Dartmouth on the board in the 48th minute, finishing off a penalty corner play with assists going to Eliza Becker and Anna Ewasechko.
After Selena Garzio gave the Quakers back a one-goal lead at 2-1 in the 58th minute, Donald was able to answer with her re-directed bid inside the far post to send the game to extra time. Morgan Philie collected the lone assist on the play with a long pass into the circle.
Penn had been handling opponents throughout their eight-game win streak they had coming into Saturday's affair. That trend of strong play continued against Dartmouth as the home team had a 27-14 edge in total shots and a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal. Penalty corners were also 10-8 in favor of the home team.
Duffy was strong for the majority of her 98:43 of play, highlighted by the save on Hoover's OT penalty stroke bid. At the other end of the field, Liz Mata turned aside just two Dartmouth shots combined between the four total periods of play.
The contest marked the Green and White's first foray in double overtime in almost exactly five years, dating back to an Oct. 12, 2010 contest with UMass (L, 5-4).
The Big Green are back in action at home on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt against Maine. The game is set to get underway at 3 p.m.
