HANOVER, N.H. – The 19th-ranked Maine field hockey team came away from Tuesday's non-conference tilt with Dartmouth 2-1 winners at Chase AstroTurf Field.
The Black Bears improved to 13-2 overall this season with their seventh straight victory, while the Big Green were bested for the second time in as many games to drop to 4-7 this fall.
The visitors got on the board first with Nicole Sevey netting her fifth of the season in the sixth minute of the contest.
Fifth-year senior and co-captain Rebecca Hu answered back for Dartmouth when she notched her eighth of the fall in the 26th minute to tie the game at one. The play started on a corner with Hu finishing it off with a blast between the leg pads of starting goalkeeper Emma Cochran.
Senior and fellow co-captain Eliza Becker picked up her 10th assist of the season on the stop and pass to Hu, while Anna Ewasechko also registered a helper on the push.
That would be the last time the Green found the back of the net as the Black Bears' defense was strong the rest of the way in limiting scoring opportunities. Their offense countered as well and wasted little time in retaking the lead as Madison Cummings put Maine back ahead by one for good in the 31st minute on a nice passing play with Samantha Gomes.
Maine would switch goalkeepers at the half with Emily Corbett coming into the game for the final 35 minutes and making the Bears' lone save of the game. However, despite not making a stop, it was Cochran who earned the win.
Junior Paige Duffy made four stops in the loss, keeping her team in the game throughout.
Shots favored Maine, 12-10, while penalty corners went in Dartmouth's favor, 7-2.
The Big Green are back in action on Saturday at noon in New Haven, taking on Yale.
