NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Dartmouth field hockey team earned a one-goal win, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Yale to register its first Ivy League victory of 2015.
Rebecca Hu's ninth goal of the season came less than 10 minutes into the second half and proved to be the game winner as the Big Green improved to 1-3 in Ancient Eight play and 5-7 overall.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in conference games.
Dartmouth took a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from seniors
Brooke Van Valkenburg and
Eliza Becker in the 24th and 26th minutes, respectively. Yale's Carol Middough answered with her team's first marker of the game less than three minutes after Becker's to pull the home team to within one.
After Hu notched her second goal in as many games, 18 minutes would go by before the Elis' Kiwi Comizio could find the back of the net again for the home team.
That would be all the scoring that would occur thanks in large part to the outstanding play of both teams' goalkeepers. Junior
Paige Duffy finished two saves shy of her career high with 11 on this day against the Bulldogs, while Emilie Katz had nine at the other end of the field.
In addition to her goal, Van Valkenburg also had a defensive save in the game, as did Yale's Jackie Katz.
In a game that featured a combined 47 shot attempts, the home team held a slight 26-21 edge. Yale also had an 11-10 advantage in penalty corners.
Clare Detrick-Yee and
Joanne Nazareth had assists in the game for Dartmouth.
The Big Green are back in action next Sunday, Oct. 25 at home against Columbia. Game time is scheduled for noon from Chase Field.
