HANOVER, N.H. – For the second year in a row, the Harvard women's hockey team came to Thompson Arena ranked fifth in the nation and for the second year in a row, it left with a loss.
At the other end of the spectrum, Dartmouth opened its 2015-16 season in spectacular fashion, knocking off a top-10 team and ECAC Hockey foe, 2-1, in front of a vocal Thompson Arena crowd Friday night.
A Lindsey Allen goal with less than a second remaining in the first period and a Kennedy Ottenbreit marker mid-way through the second proved to be all the scoring the home team needed on this night, despite a convincing 33-21 shots on goal advantage.
“I thought the team really played with a lot of energy tonight and that was huge for us,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “We did a good job of executing what we have been working on in practice in just the short amount of time we have in the preseason.”
The Crimson got on the board first with a Miye D'Oench power-play marker at 12:54, just five seconds away from the teams returning to even strength.
That would be all that beat junior netminder Robyn Chemago as the Slave Lake, Alberta, native finished the night with 20 saves.
Allen's first goal of the season was initially reviewed to determine if it indeed crossed the line before the green light ending the period illuminated. Upon review by the referees, the goal was confirmed as it hit the back of the net with 0.4 showing on the clock, sending the teams to the first intermission tied at 1-1.
The goal was the result of a great pass from senior co-captain Laura Stacey at the blueline. Stacey sent a backhanded saucer pass to the high slot and onto Allen's stick where her infuriating patience paid off with the first Big Green tally of the season.
Ottenbreit's eventual game winner was the result of some nifty passing from Allen and freshman Kate Landers entering the zone. Two drop passes saw the puck eventually land on Ottenbreit's tape where she snapped off a wrister that beat Harvard's Emerance Maschmeyer.
A late third-period push by the Crimson fell short as Dartmouth earned its second straight win against its rivals from Cambridge for the first time since the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns.
The home team finished the night 1-for-3 on the man-advantage as Allen's marker came on the power play. The visitors were 1-for-4 on the night skating with the extra player.
The Big Green return to the ice next weekend with a pair of conference home games against St. Lawrence (7 p.m.) and Clarkson (3:30 p.m.) on Friday and Saturday.
