HANOVER, N.H. – After falling behind by three goals in the first period, the 10th-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team mounted a fevered comeback over the final 40 minutes of regulation to earn a 3-3 tie Saturday afternoon against No. 4 Clarkson inside Thompson Arena.
The Big Green are now 1-1-1 overall and in conference action, while the Golden Knights tied their second game in a row and are 9-0-2 and 0-0-2 in ECAC Hockey play.
“I thought we played a very good game today,” head coach Mark Hudak said. “We felt as though Clarkson had a couple of breaks in the first period, but the team battled through that and came back in the second and stayed committed to what we were doing. Our leadership on the team was key in our ability to fight back.”
Four Dartmouth players ended the day with a point with seniors Laura Stacey (0-2-2) and Eleni Tebano (0-2-2) posting multi-point efforts.
Clarkson scored three times in the first to give itself a comfortable lead heading into the locker room at the first intermission. Savannah Harmon opened scoring with a power-play goal at 7:51 and Genevieve Bannon made it 2-0 with her shorthanded marker at 15:33. A Cayley Mercer tally exactly two minutes later gave the Golden Knights the three-goal advantage after 20 minutes.
Things turned around for Dartmouth in the final three minutes of the second. Sophomore Brooke Ahbe got the home team on the board, receiving the puck from Stacey at the top of the crease and beating Clarkson netminder Shea Tiley to the low glove side. At 19:34 and with just one second remaining on the power play, a quick pass between Tebano and Stacey made its way to junior Kennedy Ottenbreit, who sent the puck into the right corner with a slapshot from the top left circle.
Five minutes into the third, Tebano intercepted the puck deep in Dartmouth territory and passed it to junior Emma Korbs, who carried it past two defenders and ended up right in front of Tiley. Korbs sent the puck to senior Lindsey Allen directly in front of the net and a quick flick by the senior tied the score at 3-3. Even with a couple of close calls, neither team was able to capitalize in the final minutes of regulation and the game went to overtime.
Less than a minute into extra frame, a loose puck pulled junior Robyn Chemago off her post and a few seconds longer away could have meant a goal for the Golden Knights, but the Big Green goalie was able to get back in place in time with no damage done. There were just three shots in those final five minutes, all by Clarkson.
Clarkson outshot Dartmouth, 32-20, and went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Green were 1-for-4. Freshman Christie Honor opened her collegiate career by playing the first 17 minutes of the game, making five saves in all. Chemago came into the game in favor of Honor in the first, making 24 saves, including a number of pivotal stops in the third.
The Big Green will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend, playing Brown at 7 p.m. on Friday and Yale at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
