BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior co-captain Rebecca Hu scored three goals in the second half of Sunday's non-conference game at Vermont to lift the Dartmouth field hockey team to a 4-2 win at Moulton Winder Field.
For Hu, the performance was the first hat trick of her career and couldn't have come at a better time as the home came out of the intermission with two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead.
The Skillman, New Jersey, native then took it upon herself to lift the Big Green (7-9) to the victory in the final non-Ivy League game of 2015, while sending the Catamounts' record to 4-15 overall in the process.
Fellow senior and co-captain Eliza Becker got the visitors on the board first, netting her second goal in as many days and her fifth of the season in the 23rd minute with Clare Detrick-Yee picking up the lone assist. The Becker goal stood as the only marker of the first half.
Vermont responded with markers from Landon Warren and Anne-Marie Farmer in the 38th and 43rd minutes, respectively, to take the lead, 2-1.
That one-goal edge lasted just under five minutes before Hu buried a rebound in the 48th minute to knot things up once again.
Hu wasn't done as she added two more in the 59th and 66th minutes to help Dartmouth to its third win in the last four games. Brooke Van Valkenburg and Becker picked up the helpers on the final two goals as Hu recorded the Green's second hat trick of the fall (Julia Donald vs. Sacred Heart, Sept. 18).
Goalkeeper Paige Duffy made two saves in earning the win as Vermont had just four shots on goal in the game. At the other end of the field, Lena Benwood stopped three in the loss.
Shot attempts were 10-10, while the Catamounts held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners, a facet of the game they weren't able to capitalize on.
Dartmouth is back in Hanover on Saturday afternoon to close out the fall against Cornell. The game is set to start at noon and will be followed by a Senior Day ceremony afterward to honor the members of the Class of 2016.
