MADISON, Wis. – In its first of two games in the Midwest, the Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to No. 1 Wisconsin, 4-1, in front of a sold out crowd at LaBahn Arena on Friday evening.
The Big Green – which are just the fifth opponent to score on Wisconsin this season – fell to 4-3-2, while the Badgers increased their unbeaten streak to 15-0-0.
"I thought we competed really hard," head coach Mark Hudak said. "We took a couple of unnecessary penalties, which is tough against a good team like that. If we can do the little things a little bit better, we can be more competitive tomorrow. Wisconsin is a really good team and they certainly tested all of us tonight."
Playing in her 100th career game, senior Lindsey Allen was Dartmouth's lone goal-scorer, and she and classmate Laura Stacey ended the night with a point apiece. Allen has netted the Green's first goal in six of the nine games Dartmouth has played so far this season. She is also the first Dartmouth player to get past a Badger goalie since 2005.
Junior netminder Robyn Chemago had a career-high 49 saves throughout the game, including 21 in the second period.
Wisconsin set the tone right from the get-go, as a shot by leading goal- and point-scorer Annie Pankowski hit the pipe just thirty seconds into the first period. Pankowski returned shortly after to get the Badgers on the board at 3:25. Less than three minutes later at 5:04, Allen tied the score at one, picking up Stacey's deflected shot and sending it to the left of netminder Ann-Renee Desbiens, who was still covering her right post after saving Stacey's shot.
At 6:30 in the second, Wisconsin's Sarah Nurse broke through the Dartmouth defense and nothing stood between her and the back of the net except for Chemago, but the Green junior stayed poised and saved the point-blank shot. At 13:34, after the Badgers had taken four straight shots – all of which were saved by Chemago – Jenny Ryan broke the draw to put Wisconsin up, 2-1. Allen and junior Emma Korbs tried to get goal number two at the very end of the period, but Desbiens managed to save both.
After a Wisconsin-dominated opening to the third period, Dartmouth played its part in controlling play for a while. The Big Green took four consecutive shots, with all but one having to be saved by Desbiens. After a handful of close calls, Wisconsin scored twice more to close the game; Sophia Shaver got the Badgers' third of the night at 13:54, while Emily Clark ended things with her tally at 19:17.
Wisconsin outshot Dartmouth, 53-22. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play, as the Green went 0-for-5 and the Badgers were 0-for-6. Desbiens totaled 21 saves to earn the win.
Dartmouth will get a chance at redemption, returning to LaBahn on Saturday for a 4 p.m. puck drop.
