MADISON, Wis. – A trio of second-period goals scored in a six minute span helped lead No. 1 Wisconsin to a 4-0 defeat of the Dartmouth women's hockey team to close the latter's two-game weekend in the Midwest at LaBahn Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green fell to 4-4-2, while the Badgers improved to 16-0-0. Senior co-captains Catherine Berghuis and Laura Stacey led the team with two shots apiece. Junior netminder Robyn Chemago had another career day, making 59 saves.
"Robyn had an incredible weekend," head coach Mark Hudak said after the game, "and she really kept us in the game both nights. I think we learned a lot about what we need to do when playing really great teams. We are looking forward to building off this as we go through the rest of the season."
At 12:46 in the first period, Sarah Nurse came close to opening scoring, as her shot hit the left pipe, bounced off the crossbar and deflected out, much to the chagrin of the gasping Badger fans. At 16:48, Annie Pankowski's shot appeared to find the back of the net, but after the officials went to video review, the game remained tied at zero. Dartmouth is just the third opponent all season to not allow a Wisconsin goal in the first.
The Big Green held off the Badgers until 9:13 in the second period, when Nurse's shot from the circle tipped off Chemago's glove and into the net, coming seven seconds after Dartmouth was called on a penalty. Nurse got goal number two of the period five minutes later at 14:38 and, 13 seconds into the power play, Emily Clark made it 3-0 at 15:25.
At 12:00 in the third, Stacey and classmate Lindsey Allen appeared to have a good thing going, but the puck just missed Allen and sailed to the right of the net. The Badgers got their fourth of the day at 14:23 courtesy of a Sam Cogan power-play marker. Senior Ailish Forfar had a chance with 15 seconds remaining, but the shot went just high.
The Badgers outshot the Green, 63-9, and went 3-for-6 on the power play, while holding Dartmouth to 0-for-1.
Dartmouth gets back to ECAC Hockey play next weekend, heading to Connecticut and New Jersey to face Quinnipiac and Princeton.
