THIS WEEKEND
After a two-week break from action, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will return to the field on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against Harvard. This is the Green's first Ivy League game of the year, while the Crimson already opened conference play last week against Brown. This will be the sixth year in a row that Dartmouth has kicked off Ivy League action against Harvard.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth picked up its first win of the season on the road on March 7, defeating Wagner, 11-10. First-year head coach Brendan Callahan also earned his first victory at the helm of the Big Green program. For the second game in a row, Jack Korzelius had a huge performance, netting four of the visitors' 11 goals to lead both teams. Wiley Osborne and KC Beard each had a goal and two assists for three points. After trailing for most of the game, markers by Billy Heidt and Jake Weil a minute apart early in the fourth quarter gave Dartmouth its first lead of the game, but goals by Wagner's Billy Orme and JP Pawela tied the score at 10 with just eight minutes left to play. With 4:53 remaining, Osborne scored the eventual game-winner to give Dartmouth an 11-10 lead that would hold until the final horn. Phil Hession broke his own single-game record from the April 23, 2013 game against Holy Cross, grabbing 12 groundballs. The two teams were evenly matched, with both taking 29 shots on goal. The Big Green went 1-for-3 with the extra man, while the Seahawks went 2-for-5. Dartmouth picked up 21 groundballs compared to Wagner's 16 and the visitors won a season-high 14 faceoffs, while the Seahawks won 11-of-25.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard opened 2015 with a 14-13 victory over Massachusetts on Feb. 21 before falling to No. 6 Duke, 21-14, a week later. Since then, the Crimson have had relatively easy defeats of Quinnipiac (17-12), Penn State (12-9) and Holy Cross (20-9). Most recently, Harvard is coming off two consecutive losses, falling to No. 18/19 Brown, 14-9, in its Ivy League opener on March 14 before suffering a 15-10 loss to North Carolina three days later.
LAST TIME AGAINST HARVARD
After beginning the game with back-to-back goals for an early 2-0 lead, Harvard came back to take the game, 16-7, on March 22, 2014. Jack McCormick scored his first collegiate goal just seven seconds into the contest after Phil Hession won the opening faceoff, picking up the ground ball and sprinting toward the goal before making a quick, last-second pass at the side of the net to McCormick for the first strike. After a Cam Lee goal put the Green up by two, Harvard rattled off seven straight before Weil scored a man-down tally with just one second remaining in the first half. The Crimson would net nine more in the final two quarters to take the win.
CALLAHAN & CO.
After a 2-10 campaign last season, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team is looking to rebuild in 2015. That rebuild began last summer with the hiring of Callahan, who came to Hanover after spending the last seven years as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Lehigh. Callahan brought in Tucker Kear and Kevin Gould to round out the Big Green's new look on the sidelines.
LEADING THE WAY
After four-goal performances against both Sacred Heart and Wagner, Korzelius leads the team in both goals (8) and points (8). Don Stephan and Osborne are close behind with six points; Stephan has four goals and two assists, while Osborne has netted three goals and tallied three assists. Hession leads the team with 24 groundballs and has gone 25-for-50 in faceoffs.
FRESH FACES
Making their collegiate debut this year in the Class of 2018 are Willis Bocock, Jase Davis, Cormac Dugan, Cody George, Alex Kelly, Evan Key, Jack Korzelius, Patrick Lesch, Richie Loftus, James McJunkin, Sam Runkle, Doug Strazza and Ty Vandenberg. Korzelius leads the way with eight markers, while Key has tacked on one of his own.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Seeing time in net this season are Blair Friedensohn and Colin Heffernan, two of Dartmouth's four goalkeepers from last season. So far this year, Friedensohn has started all four games, making 37 saves while allowing 46 goals, has a 15.11 goals against average and a .446 save percentage. Heffernan has appeared in three contests in 2015, making three saves and allowing nine markers. He has a 9.42 goals against average and a .250 save percentage. Against Wagner, he earned the win after playing the last 30 minutes of the game. Friedensohn made all six saves throughout the day.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Dartmouth will host a 3 p.m. non-conference game against Vermont on Tuesday, March 24.
