Last Week in Review
• For the second straight year, Dartmouth opened its season against a nationally ranked squad, this time No. 14 Texas A&M.
• While the Big Green were swept in the three-game series, the first loss was the toughest to swallow. Dartmouth took a 3-0 lead into the eighth, only to have Texas A&M belt a pair of two-run homers to steal a 4-3 win and drop the Green to 12-14 in season openers under head coach Bob Whalen, now in his 26th year.
• The season-opening loss was eerily similar to the first and only previous encounter between the two schools, coming at the 2010 NCAA Regional in Coral Gables, Florida. The Aggies hit solo homers in the eighth and ninth to erase a 3-2 deficit and eliminate Dartmouth, 4-3.
• Junior RHP Duncan Robinson, a first-team All-Ivy selection in 2014, picked up where he left off, recording five shutout innings in his first start.
• Senior SS Matt Parisi enjoyed a fine series, hitting .364 (4-for-11) and scoring three of the Big Green's eight runs, while fielding 12 chances at shortstop without an error.
• The first Dartmouth home run of the season was provided by junior DH Joe Purritano, which was the lone run in the 8-1 loss in game two.
• A pair of freshmen started all three games in the field with Kyle Holbrook in right field and Dustin Shirley at second base. Holbrook collected three hits with a double, Shirley recorded his first collegiate hit while playing flawlessly in the field.
• Another rookie in RHP Sam Fichthorn twirled 3.2 shutout innings in two appearances against the Aggies.
Quick Scout of the Hoosiers
• Indiana was the top seed in the regional it hosted last year, but Stanford emerged from that bracket. The Hoosiers then opened against the Cardinal this year, winning two of three in Palo Alto.
• Entering the weekend, Indiana sports a 4-4 record, hitting .263 as a team with an ERA of 2.72.
• Four players are hitting .300 or better, led by Scott Donley at .333 while Nick Ramos has provided the most power with a .536 slugging percentage.
Quick Scout of the Wildcats
• Coming off a 19-33 season last year, Northwestern has struggled out of the gate with just one win in 10 games.
• The Wildcats are hitting .237 as a team with Scott Heelan (.343, 4 2B) and Joe Hoscheit (.316, 3 2B, 1 3B) the toughest outs.
• The staff ERA is 4.99, but Jake Stolley has been lights out in the bullpen at 1.86 over seven appearances spanning 9.2 innings with 13 strikeouts.
Quick Scout of the Cardinals
• Ball State is off to a 6-5 start to its season, including a 2-1 victory over nationally ranked Illinois.
• The team batting average of .269 is bolstered by Elbert Devaire (.404/.462/.532) and Alex Call (.370/.420/.522) with the latter 3-for-3 on the basepaths.
• The Cardinals' have a team ERA of 4.19, but has a lethal combination in the bullpen in RHP B.J. Butler (1-1, 1.32, 13.2 IP) and LHP Devin Wilburn (1-0, 1.35).
Quick Scout of the Bison
• Bucknell is off to a good start with a 5-2 record with a victory over Wake Forest and a three-game sweep of VCU.
• No one has cooled Joe Ogren (.586/.647/1.034) off yet this year as he leads the Bison offense that hits .289 as a team. He also has half of the squad's six home runs and 13 RBIs.
• The pitching staff has posted a solid 3.71 ERA with its top two starters throwing more than half of the 63 innings. Danny Rafferty has done well in two appearances at the end of games, striking out five in 3.2 innings while yielding no runs on just two hits.
Probable Starting Pitchers
• Dartmouth will send RHP Duncan Robinson (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against Indiana after his five scoreless innings against Texas A&M last weekend. The Hoosiers will counter with RHP Christian Morris (1-0, 3.24) who has not walked a batter in 16.2 innings with nine strikeouts.
• On Saturday, the Big Green will send sophomore RHP Mike Concato (2-3, 3.81 in 2014) will make his season debut against Northwestern, while the Wildcats will have LHP Matt Portland (0-2, 2.50) toe the slab.
• Later that day, Concato's older brother, senior RHP Louis Concato (0-1, 3.60) will likely square off against Ball State RHP Brendan Burns (1-0, 4.22), who earned his win this year with 5.1 innings of one-run relief against Elon.
• The starters for Sunday's showdown versus Bucknell have not been announced, but the Big Green have senior LHP Adam Frank (0-1, 27.00) penciled in for the start.
