CHARLESTON, S.C. — After a pair of shutout victories on Saturday, the Dartmouth softball team fell in a heartbreaking extra inning contest to Jacksonville, 4-2 (8), on Sunday at the Holy City Showdown.
Dartmouth (4-10) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but a three-run walk-off homer by Ashley Simon gave the Dolphins the 4-2 victory.
Senior Kristen Rumley had two stints inside the circle and allowed three earned runs on three hits in 5.2 innings and struck out six hitters. Junior Morgan McCalmon replaced Rumley in the fifth and pitched two perfect innings before allowing Rumley to finish the game.
Victoria Brown went the distance for the Dolphins and allowed one earned run on three hits.
Jacksonville scored the first run in the second on a double steal after Danielle Baker singled to left center and then Brown reached on an error allowing Baker to reach third. Brown stole second and Baker scored on the throw.
Pitching came into play until the Dartmouth sixth when freshman Madison Smith sent her first collegiate hit over the left field wall to tie the game at one-all.
In the extra frame, the International Tiebreaker Rule was put into effect, which gave Dartmouth the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly RBI by junior Kathy Dzienkowski.
Jacksonville also started with a runner at second base and drew a two-out walk followed by the homer by Simon.
Dartmouth is off until Mar 18 when they take on Hofstra to begin an 11-day Mid-Atlantic road trip.
