HANOVER, N.H. – Despite a late goal from sophomore Julia Donald, the Dartmouth field hockey team fell to Northeastern, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field.
The Big Green closed out their three-game homestand to start the season with a 1-2 overall record and will play UMass in their first road tilt of 2015 on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 2-3 this fall with the win.
Dartmouth controlled tempo and play through much of the first half. However, Northeastern was able to get on the board in the 31st minute as Kellie Stigas — sister of former Big Green assistant coach Kristine Stigas — slipped a shot through the pads of goalkeeper Paige Duffy for the 1-0 lead.
The visitors built the lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute on a great individual effort by Natalie Stewart in the circle. Stewart collected a loose ball and batted it out of the air and into the top left corner of the net.
Donald's second goal of the year now ties her with Rebecca Hu for the team lead through three games. The sophomore put together a solid rush before stopping at the top of the circle and unleashing a blast into the shortside of the net to pull the home team within one in the 67th minute.
Time would not be the Green's friend, though, as it wound down without the equalizer coming.
Duffy was strong in net despite suffering the loss, making several impressive stops, including a diving save on June Curry-Lindahl in the second half when it seemed the open netmouth was awaiting for a Huskies' goal. Duffy finished the game with eight saves, while her counterpart in NU's Becky Garner made four.
Clare Detrick-Yee and Brooke Van Valkenburg also chipped in with a defensive save each during a two-minute window on consecutive penalty corner plays by the Huskies.
Overall, the visitors outshot Dartmouth, 15-12, with the Green leading, 5-4, in corners.
