HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped its 2015 season opener, 3-2, in overtime Friday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field against visiting UMass Lowell.
Torrie Huk netted the game winner just 53 seconds into the extra session. Huk used a quick turnaround shot 15 feet from the goal line thanks to a well-placed pass into the circle from Sophie Watt.
The shot beat the Big Green's junior Paige Duffy, who was making her first collegiate start in goal. Duffy played well throughout the game, making seven saves, but suffered the loss despite her best efforts.
Kelsey Frederico earned the win at the other end of the field, stopping six in picking up her third win of the season.
The game began much differently than it ended, with Brooke Van Valkenburg netting the opening tally of 2015 just 3:40 into the contest. The senior midfielder finished a corner play with Eliza Becker and Anna Ewasecko, finding space in the lower right corner.
With just 2:26 remaining in the first half, senior captain Rebecca Hu jumped on a loose ball in a scrum and buried her first of the fall into an open netmouth, pushing the Dartmouth lead to two at the intermission.
The River Hawks (3-0) responded in the second half as Annie Villare and Jessica Walsh scored in the 41st and 54th minutes, respectively, to tie the game and force OT.
A physical, but clean battle all afternoon saw two yellow and two green cards assessed.
In all, the Big Green outshout their non-conference opponents from Lowell, 20-16, while also edging them in corners, 11-7.
Dartmouth returns to action on Sunday when it plays host to Granite State rival New Hampshire. Game time between the Green and Wildcats is set for 1 p.m. from Chase Field.
