HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team defeated Granite State rival New Hampshire, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field.
For the Big Green, it was the first win of the season (1-1) and, in the process, snapped a four-game skid against the Wildcats (2-1), dating back to the 2011 season.
“Our ability to maintain momentum and change the things that were unsuccessful on Friday were the keys for us today,” head coach Amy Fowler said. “We cleaned up those things right from the start and that led us to play a complete game this afternoon.”
It was Dartmouth's captains who stepped up and delivered on Sunday as Eliza Becker had a goal and an assist, while Rebecca Hu chipped in a goal of her own, the second of the season for the latter of the two seniors.
Becker scored her first of the season in the 21st minute on a beautiful shot from a nearly impossible angle down low, finding the smallest amount of space between the UNH keeper and the post for the game's first marker.
However, the lead was short-lived as UNH's Katie Audino knotted the game back up at one in the 24th minute.
Becker fed sophomore Julia Donald for her first tally of the fall three minutes and change into the second half. Heather Zezzo pushed in the eventual game-winner in the 55th minute after an exceptional long pass from Sarah Tabeek into the circle for the third Dartmouth goal of the afternoon.
The Wildcats' Ashley Mendonca pulled the visitors to within a goal in the 64th minute, but any hope of a rally ended when Hu knocked in a loose ball rebound five minutes later for her second goal of the weekend.
The Green bounced back from Friday's loss to UMass Lowell in the season opener with a solid effort on Sunday. The home team held a 17-16 edge in total shot attempts and a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Penalty corner were 6-5 in favor of Dartmouth.
Junior Paige Duffy earned her first collegiate win in the cage, stopping four shots in 70 minutes, while her counterpart in Mellissa Rize was credited with the loss despite eight saves.
The Big Green are back in action on Friday afternoon at home against Northeastern. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Chase Field.
