BOSTON, Mass. – Dartmouth women's hockey fell in its first game of 2016 to No. 8/7 Northeastern by a score of 5-2 at Matthews Arena on Saturday. The Big Green are 4-9-2 on the season, while the Huskies improved to 14-4-1.
Junior Kennedy Ottenbreit scored Dartmouth's first goal of 2016 late in the opening period and assisted on the second goal, netted by freshman Tess Bracken in the third. Earning assists were Catherine Berghuis – who got her first point of her senior season – and sophomore Hailey Noronha.
"For about 45 minutes, we played well and stuck to the game plan," head coach Mark Hudak said. "We had bits and pieces here and there where we broke down and we gave Northeastern some opportunities that I don't think they earned. If we are going to be successful, we are going to have to play 60 full minutes. At the same time, we are playing two players short right now, so for the most part, we played a decent game. We just need to get back to playing consistently for 60 mintues."
Kendall Coyne, who is now second in the country in goals (25) and tied for second in points (39), tested the Green the whole game, setting the pace by hitting the pipe early in the first period on a shorthanded breakaway. Although the Huskies led in shots, 13-6, it was Dartmouth that struck first. At 16:15 in the first, Ottenbreit got the puck from Berghuis and shot from the right circle and to the left of netminder Sarah Foss. Junior Robyn Chemago was on point, stopping all 13 shots to keep Northeastern at bay.
The Huskies pressured the Big Green and, as a consequence, scored three times in the second to take the lead. Kassidy Anderson had the tying goal at 12:47, Coyne got the go ahead at 17:50 and Denisa Krizova added another at 19:09. Dartmouth got one back at 3:12 in the third when Foss saved Bracken's shot but lost track of the puck as it slowly slid into the center of a wide open net, giving Bracken her first collegiate goal. Shelby Herrington and Coyne added one more each at 4:30 and 12:17, respectively, to close scoring.
The stats were very even: the Huskies outshot the Green, 32-30, and both teams went 0-for-4 with the extra player. In net, Chemago had 27 saves, while Foss had 28.
Dartmouth will return to Thompson Arena next weekend, taking on ECAC Hockey foes Colgate on Friday and Cornell on Saturday.
