BOSTON, Mass. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team battled hard in its sixth overtime game of the season, but fell to Boston University, 1-0 in Boston on Tuesday night.
The loss drops the Big Green to 4-3-5 overall, while the Terriers improve to 5-5-2
BU's leading goal scorer, Felix De Bona scored just one minute and 54 seconds into overtime to break the scoreless draw after 90 minutes of regulation soccer at Nickerson Field. De Bona's seventh goal of the season was a curling shot from the top left corner of the box that beat Dartmouth's senior goalkeeper, James Hickok for the golden goal.
“Losing overtime games are never fun,” Big Green head coach Chad Riley said. “I thought we did enough to get a victory, we created some very good chances, but you must take your chances. If you leave a team hanging around long enough this can happen to you. We had not lost since September 21st, so this one certainly stings.”
“Credit to BU they battled and took their chance in OT to get the win,” Riley added. “We will regroup and use the next few days to prepare for our important Ivy League game on Saturday.”
Despite being outshot by a slim 12-11 margin, Dartmouth held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks which created some opportunities throughout the night.
At the eight-minute mark Big Green senior captain, Emmanuel Arteaga, had a solid chance, but his shot went high. Later in the first half, Hickok made a key save with three Terrier players in the box looking for a rebound goal. Hickok finished the night with four saves.
In the second half, both squads were trying to set up the first goal of the game, but neither could find the back of the net. In the 62nd minute, Hickok made a diving stop to deflect the ball out of bounds, keeping it a scoreless draw for the time being.
Dartmouth returns to action this Saturday when the Big Green travel to Columbia at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers.
