BOSTON, Mass. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team got back to its winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Northeastern in Brookline on Tuesday night.
With the victory, the Big Green improve to 6-4-5 overall, while the Huskies fall to 6-11-0 to end their season.
After dropping a key Ivy League contest last weekend to Harvard at home, Dartmouth was able to bounce back with a dominant performance in the Bay State. Across the pitch the Big Green faced a familiar foe in Northeastern head coach Chris Gbandi, who served as an assistant at Dartmouth for two seasons alongside Bobby Clark head coach of men's soccer, Chad Riley.
“I am very proud of the team tonight, it is always important to respond after a defeat, and I thought we had a solid performance tonight against a good Northeastern team,” Riley said. “Coach Gbandi has done a great job with his team, and this was a very tough game. Our performances have been very good over the last few weeks and now we need to continue focus on taking care of the details in our preparation.”
Dartmouth had one of its best first half performance of the season thus far, as the Big Green did a solid job dictating the pace of play. About 10 minutes into the contest, Dartmouth's senior goalkeeper, James Hickok, made a tough stop to keep it a scoreless contest for the time being. With 29 minutes to play in the first stanza Justin Donawa lined up for a corner kick and sent the ball into the box where a waiting Wyatt Omsberg knocked in the first goal of the game.
About 15 minutes later, Johnathan Nierenberg added to the Big Green's lead with his third goal of the season. Nierenberg took a shot from the top of the box that nestled into the lower left corner of the goal.
After the halftime break the team's returned to the field where Dartmouth protected its two-goal lead. In the 51st minute, Hickok managed to leap high in the air to knock down a shot that his defense was able to clear. The Westport, Connecticut native finished the evening with six saves for Hickok's fourth shutout of the season.
The Huskies held a slight 16-15 advantage in shots, but the Big Green were able to close out the match for the important road victory.
Dartmouth heads to Cornell for a pivotal Ancient Eight showdown next Saturday at 5 p.m.
