ITHACA, N.Y. – In its penultimate game of the 2015-16 season, the Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to Cornell, 1-0, in a close, hard-fought game at Lynah Rink Friday evening. The Big Green are now 6-18-3 overall and 6-12-3 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Big Red improved to 12-12-4 and 8-9-4 in conference action.
Dartmouth and Cornell came out strong and tested both goaltenders relentlessly throughout the early stages of the first period. After making a number of quick saves, junior Robyn Chemago was bested by Kaitlin Doering on a breakaway, scoring the first goal of the night – a shorthanded marker – at 11:22.
Thirty seconds later, Cassandra Poudrier pocketed one of her own, but it was waved off and the score remained 1-0 in favor of Cornell. Junior Eleni Tebano had one of Dartmouth's best chances at a goal in the final minutes of the period, but goalie Paula Voorheis had a great sliding save to thwart the attempt. During those first 20 minutes of action, the Green outshot the Red, 14-12.
Late in the second, Hanna Bunton faked Chemago out and shot to the left while the Green goalie was covering her right post, but the shot bounced off the pipe and was cleared by a Dartmouth defender. The Green controlled the puck during a lot of the third period, but were not able to even the score.
The Big Green outshot the Big Red, 21-17, and held Cornell to 0-for-4 on the power play. Junior Kennedy Ottenbreit led the team with six shots, while senior Laura Stacey was not far behind with four. Dartmouth won 34 of the 61 faceoffs. In net, Chemago had 30 saves to Voorheis' 28.
The Green will close out the year on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game against Colgate.
