DENVER, Colo. – On the first day of the Faceoff Classic on Saturday, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team was defeated by Air Force, 9-3, at Denver's Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Big Green dipped to 0-2 on the season, while the Falcons improved to 2-2.
Sophomores Cody George and Evan Key both ended the game with two points, as George had two of Dartmouth's three goals and Key had the other marker and added one assist. Junior Wiley Osborne and sophomore Jack Korzelius picked up the remaining two helpers.
"I think we took a step forward today, but still have a lot of work to do," head coach Brendan Callahan said. "Air Force is a good team and we went blow-for-blow with them to start the game, but ultimately, you can't give good teams the amount of second chances that we did and still expect to win.
"We played good defense for stretches today and Blair was good in net for us," Callahan continued. "With the game at 5-3 in the third, we had a few good chances to close the gap, but couldn't capitalize and, at that point, Air Force really turned the game in their favor. We will need to turn the page quickly and get ready for Denver."
The Green opened scoring with 5:09 left in the first quarter with Key's second tally of the season, but the Falcons would tie it less than a minute later. The score remained tied at one-all for the remainder of the first and it would take almost 10 minutes of second-quarter play for another tally to make it on the board, a goal by George with 6:29 to play.
Three Air Force markers netted in the final 2:50 of the second quarter made it 4-2 in favor of the Falcons heading into the third.
One more by Air Force a minute in made it a 5-2 game until George got his second of the game with 12:59 left on the clock. That proved to be the last Dartmouth goal that goalie Doug Gouchoe would allow, while the Falcons would get two more in the third and a pair in the fourth to close scoring.
The Falcons outshot the Green, 26-23, and were 10-for-16 on the faceoff. Dartmouth went 0-for-4 with the extra player, while Air Force was 1-for-2. Senior Blair Friedensohn ended up with nine saves and Gouchoe had 10.
Dartmouth will return to action on Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. game against host Denver.
