DENVER, Colo. – The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team fell to No. 1/2 Denver, 16-6, in the final game of the Faceoff Classic at the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday. The Big Green dipped to 0-3 this season and the Pioneers remain undefeated with a 4-0 mark.
Sophomore Jack Korzelius led Dartmouth with his first three goals of the season and added one assist to end the day with four points. Junior Wiley Osborne had two markers of his own, while four other Green players had a point apiece. Freshman Austin Meacham led the team with six ground balls.
"I was proud of the way the guys fought today," head coach Brendan Callahan said. "Denver is a great team and sets the bar in our sport right now and it was a great experience for us to see that level of play. It was really good to see Osborne and Korzelius playing hard on the offensive end today. The defense was tough again for stretches and we will work towards 60 minutes of play there.
"We took a step in the right direction this weekend and come home a better team than when we left," Callahan continued. "Our focus in the next week has to be on our stick work under pressure and improving our execution."
Denver jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, with Tyler Page getting the Pioneers on the board a minute and a half in.
Dartmouth turned things around in the second quarter to hold Denver to just one goal throughout the next 15 minutes. Korzelius scored Dartmouth's first two markers of the game to get the Green on the board. His first came with 5:13 remaining in the second and the next followed just over a minute later, with classmate Evan Key assisting on the latter. With 2:21 left on the clock, the Pioneers got their lone marker of the quarter to make it 8-2 in favor of the home team.
It was Osborne's turn to get a pair of goals in the third, as the junior found the back of the net with 11:32 to go and then again with 6:44 remaining on the clock. While the Green got just two markers, the Pioneers got six of their own and they led 14-4 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Korzelius' third of the game came a minute in – a man-up tally – with the assist going to junior KC Beard. The Pioneers would get their last two markers of the game before freshman David Marshall scored his first collegiate goal with a minute to play.
Denver outshot Dartmouth, 38-24, and won 17-of-25 faceoffs. All three of the Green's goalies made it into the game. Senior Blair Friedensohn started and played the first quarter, making two saves in all. Freshman Griffin Miller made his debut in the second and had two saves before making way for classmate Joe Balaban, who played the remaining 43 minutes of the game, stopping eight shots.
Dartmouth will open its five-game home slate on Saturday, March 5, when it hosts Wagner in a non-conference contest.
