THIS WEEKEND
Dartmouth men's lacrosse will open its five-game home slate on Saturday, hosting Wagner in a non-conference game scheduled for 1 p.m. at Scully-Fahey Field.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green went 0-2 at the Faceoff Classic over the weekend, falling to Air Force, 9-3, on Saturday before being defeated by No. 1/2 Denver, 16-6, the following day.
-Against the Falcons
Cody George and Evan Key both ended the game with two points, as George had two of Dartmouth's three goals and Key had the other marker and added one assist. Wiley Osborne and Jack Korzelius picked up the remaining two helpers. The Green opened scoring with 5:09 left in the first quarter with Key's second tally of the season, but the Falcons would tie it less than a minute later. The score remained tied at one-all for the remainder of the first and it would take almost 10 minutes of second-quarter play for another tally to make it on the board, a goal by George with 6:29 to play. Three Air Force markers netted in the final 2:50 of the second quarter made it 4-2 in favor of the Falcons heading into the third. One more by Air Force a minute in made it a 5-2 game until George got his second of the game with 12:59 left on the clock. That proved to be the last Dartmouth goal that goalie Doug Gouchoe would allow, while the Falcons would get two more in the third and a pair in the fourth to close scoring.
-Versus the Pioneers
Korzelius led Dartmouth with his first three goals of the season and added one assist to end the day with four points. Osborne had two markers of his own, while four other Green players had a point apiece. Austin Meacham led the team with six ground balls. Denver jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, with Tyler Pace getting the Pioneers on the board a minute and a half in. Dartmouth turned things around in the second quarter to hold Denver to just one goal throughout the next 15 minutes. Korzelius scored Dartmouth's first two markers of the game to get the Green on the board. His first came with 5:13 remaining in the second and the next followed just over a minute later, with Key assisting on the latter. With 2:21 left on the clock, the Pioneers got their lone marker of the quarter to make it 8-2 in favor of the home team. It was Osborne's turn to get a pair of goals in the third, as the junior found the back of the net with 11:32 to go and then again with 6:44 remaining on the clock. While the Green got just two markers, the Pioneers got six of their own and they led 14-4 heading into the final 15 minutes. Korzelius' third of the game came a minute in – a man-up tally – with the assist going to KC Beard. The Pioneers would get their last two markers of the game before David Marshall scored his first collegiate goal with a minute to play.
SCOUTING WAGNER
The Seahawks picked up a 15-8 victory over Manhattan to open 2016 in early February, but have not been able to win a game since then. Wagner fell to Lafayette (12-7), Monmouth (8-4) and, most recently, Rutgers (15-7). Leading the team with 11 points is Andrew Streilein (5G, 6A).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE SEAHAWKS
Saturday's game is just the third time the Big Green and the Seahawks have met. On March 7, 2015, Dartmouth picked up its first win of the season with an 11-10 victory over Wagner at Hameline Field. Korzelius had a huge performance, netting four of the Green's 11 goals to lead both teams. Osborne and Beard each had a goal and two assists for three points. Phil Hession broke his own single-game record with 12 groundballs. The home team got on the board first with a Paul DeVita marker 50 seconds into the game, but Dartmouth followed that up less than a minute later when Beard netted his first of the season with 13:17 to play. The Seahawks then went on to score three unanswered goals and kept the Big Green with just one point until Cam Lee scored a man-up tally with 3:46 remaining in the first quarter. Fast forward to the fourth quarter and another goal by Beard with 12:38 to play in the tied the score at eight, while markers by Billy Heidt and Jake Weil a minute apart gave Dartmouth its first lead of the game, a 10-8 edge with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth. Goals by Billy Orme and JP Pawela tied the score at 10 with just eight minutes left to play. After assisting on two goals, Osborne got one of his own with 4:53 remaining, scoring the eventual game-winner to give Dartmouth an 11-10 lead that would hold until the final horn.
LEADING THE WAY
With just three games under their belts, Osborne leads the Green with six points (3G, 3A). He also leads in assists and is tied with Korzelius and George in markers.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Blair Friedensohn played the entirety of the game against Air Force, making nine saves in the loss. The next day against Denver, he played the first quarter and had two saves. Seeing time in net for the first time in their collegiate careers were Joe Balaban and Griffin Miller. Balaban played 43 minutes between the pipes, making eight saves, while Miller replaced him for the final 1:41 and had a pair of stops.
WHAT'S NEXT?
After Saturday's game, the Big Green will have two weeks off from competition, next heading to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan on March 19.
