ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse won its first game of the 2016 season, reaching double-digit points for the first time this year with a 13-12 victory over Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
This was the first time in program history that the teams have met. The Big Green improved to 1-4, while the Wolverines lost their second straight contest and dipped to 3-4.
"The men put forth a tremendous effort and they were rewarded with a win," head coach Brendan Callahan said. "I was extremely impressed with the way they worked and responded since our last game. They didn't put their heads down, but rather attacked the last two weeks with a positive attitude. We knew today wasn't going to be pretty, but we dug down and gutted one out."
Four Dartmouth players ended the day with three points apiece. Senior Cam Lee had a trio of tallies, while sophomores Evan Key and Richie Loftus had a pair of goals and an assist and junior Wiley Osborne had one marker and two helpers.
Michigan's only lead of the game was at the very beginning of the contest. The Wolverines opened scoring less than two minutes in, but Osborne evened the score three minutes later. That proved to be the only time the two teams were tied, as four straight Green goals – including one by Lee with a single tick left on the clock – gave the visitors a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
Dartmouth was held to just one tally in the second, while Michigan got three of its own to make it 6-4 in favor of the Big Green. The Wolverines made it a one-goal game a minute into the third and the teams traded points until Dartmouth sported a 9-7 edge at the end of the third quarter.
The Green were able to hold on to their lead thanks to four straight markers to start the fourth. Less than 20 seconds in, sophomore Willis Bocock scored his first of the season and, three minutes later, classmate Richie Loftus got his first of the year. Bocock added another with 10:29 to play and Lee closed out Dartmouth's scoring with 8:56 remaining.
Michigan went on to net five unanswered goals to make it an incredibly close, 13-12 game, but the Wolverines ran out of time before they were able to tie the score.
Dartmouth outshot Michigan, 47-29. Senior Blair Friedensohn won his first game of the year, ending the day with eight saves. Freshman Joe Balaban stepped in for a few minutes and had a save.
The Big Green will return to Scully-Fahey Field on Tuesday, March 22 for just its second home game of the season, hosting NJIT at 3 p.m.
