HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team fell to NJIT, 10-7, at Scully-Fahey Field on Tuesday. The Big Green dipped to 1-5 on the season, while the Highlanders won their first game in their two years of existence to improve to 1-9 on the year.
Junior Wiley Osborne led the team by scoring six of Dartmouth's seven goals. Sophomore Richie Loftus scored the other goal and ended the afternoon with two points, while classmates Evan Key and Doug Strazza and freshman Austin Meacham all tallied an assist.
Dartmouth got on the board first, courtesy of Osborne's ninth of the season less than five minutes into the first. Within three minutes, NJIT had tied the score and taken back the lead with one more, but Osborne made it two-all with 5:30 to play. The Highlanders scored the last tally of the quarter with 2:12 remaining to give NJIT a one-goal lead going into the second.
The visitors held on to that 3-2 lead until halfway through the second, when three unanswered goals gave the Green a 5-3 lead. Osborne tied the score at 3-3 with a shot just under the crossbar and then put Dartmouth back on top three minutes later. With 4:44 left, the Big Green got their first goal scored by someone other than Osborne, a quick shot to the left by Loftus. NJIT's lone goal of the quarter came less than two minutes later to make it a 5-4 game.
Just eight seconds into the third quarter, Osborne got number five of the day to give Dartmouth a 6-4 lead that would not last long, as NJIT got its fifth soon after. The Highlanders scored again with three minutes left on the clock and the two teams would enter the final 15 minutes tied at 6-6. NJIT netted four unanswered goals in the fourth to give the visitors a 10-6 edge with just five minutes remaining in the game. With 1:44 to go, Osborne scored his sixth of the day to make it a three-point game, but the Highlanders' defense prevented any more goals after that point.
Dartmouth outshot NJIT, 41-25, and went 15-for-20 in faceoffs. In net, senior Blair Friedensohn had five saves, while Nick Marzullo picked up his first career win with 14 saves.
Already a month into their season, the Big Green will open Ivy League play on Saturday, March 26, with a 3 p.m. game at Harvard.
