CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse opened Ivy League play on Saturday with an 18-8 loss to No. 14/15 Harvard at Harvard Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green dipped to 1-6, while the Crimson improved to 5-4 this season.
Harvard opened the game by scoring four unanswered goals in the first 15 minutes, but a tally by sophomore Richie Loftus with seven seconds remaining in the first quarter got Dartmouth on the board and made it 4-1 in favor of the home team.
The Crimson outscored the Green 6-2 in the second. Senior Cam Lee netted the first goal of the quarter, a man-up marker scored 20 seconds after a Harvard penalty. Like he did in the opening quarter, Loftus waited until almost the last second to strike, getting goal number two of the game with just nine seconds to go.
Freshman Joe Balaban replaced senior Blair Friedensohn between the pipes in the third and, during that quarter, Harvard scored five goals to Dartmouth's two; sophomore Jack Korzelius got the Green's second man-up tally late in the quarter, while senior Austin Duncan scored his first goal of the season with 54 seconds left on the clock. The Crimson sported a 15-5 edge heading into the fourth quarter.
Harvard got a pair of goals 20 seconds apart to open the fourth, but Dartmouth scored three unassisted goals in a row to slightly lessen the Crimson's lead. Korzelius netted his second of the contest and his eighth of the season with 11:43 to play, while junior Wiley Osborne got a pair of tallies in the final seven minutes of play. Harvard scored once more with 4:36 remaining to end the game.
The Green outshot the Crimson, 38-36, and went 15-for-29 at the X. In net, Friedensohn had seven saves and Balaban stopped six shots.
The Big Green will head to Burlington on Tuesday, March 29, to face non-conference rival Vermont at 6 p.m.
