BURLINGTON, Vt. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse played its penultimate non-conference contest of the season, falling to Vermont by a score of 15-9 under the lights of Virtue Field on Tuesday. The Big Green fell to 1-7 on the season, while the Catamounts improved to 5-5.
Sophomore Richie Loftus had a good game, netting four of Dartmouth's nine goals. Senior KC Beard was right behind Loftus with three points from a pair of goals and an assist, while classmate Cam Lee and junior Wiley Osborne both ended the night with two points apiece.
The Green came out aggressively and went on to score the first goal in each of the four quarters. Loftus got the visitors on the board with 12:44 to play in the opening quarter, but a Catamount tally less than 50 seconds later tied things up and one more in the late stages of the first put Vermont on top.
Like in the first quarter, just three goals were scored in the second and the Catamounts sported a 4-2 edge heading into halftime.
The third and fourth quarters were where the game picked up, as a combined 18 markers were scored during those final 30 minutes. In the fourth, Loftus had a trio of goals in the span of nine minutes, junior Don Stephan had an unassisted tally with two minutes to go and Beard closed the game, but six Vermont goals during that final quarter gave the win to the Catamounts.
Vermont outshot Dartmouth, 53-40. The Green went 10-for-26 in faceoffs and grabbed 24 ground balls. Freshman Joe Balaban played his first full game and made 19 saves.
The Big Green will return to Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. game against Ivy League rival Cornell.
