SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Dartmouth softball team won its third game in a row with a 6-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Big Green improve to 5-8, while the Roadrunners fall to 5-15.
Senior Katie McEachern continued her solid weekend in the Golden State as she homered to left field to lead off the game for Dartmouth. Sophomore Breanna Ethridge got the start in the circle for the Big Green, striking out two batters in the bottom of the first. The Loganville, Georgia native finished the day with seven strikeouts through four innings of work to improve to 1-3 on the season.
Dartmouth scored four runs in the top of the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead. With one out, senior Kelsey Miller doubled to center field before CSU Bakersfield's Lyndsay Klimenko walked two batters. With one out, Amber Mills came into pitch for the Roadrunners, but the Big Green's success at the plate continued. McEachern plated one run with an RBI walk. The next batter, sophomore Lourlin Lara reached base on a fielder's choice as freshman Taylor Ward scored on an error.
Junior Maddie Damore continued her strong weekend on the West Coast with an RBI single, scoring two runs to give Dartmouth it's largest lead of the afternoon.
Ethridge continued to pitch well keeping CSU Bakersfield hitless until the fourth inning, when Adrianna Cardoza hit an RBI single to center field, cutting the Big Green's lead to 5-1.
In the fifth, freshman Laura Stone came in to pitch in relief of Ethridge, but the Roadrunners were able to score again on a Sydney Raeber sacrifice fly. CSU Bakersfield cut its deficit to two runs in the sixth, as senior Morgan McCalmon came into pitch for Stone with two outs getting Alex Simmons to fly out to end the inning.
Dartmouth added one more run to its lead in the top of the seventh when junior Karen Chaw hit her first home run of the season to left field in what was a solid day at the plate for the catcher. The Castro Valley, California native went 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Roadrunners hit a lead off single in the seventh, but could not complete a comeback, as McCalmon shut the door on CSU Bakersfield to earn her first save of the season.
The Big Green concluded their most successful tournament of the season going 4-1 in Santa Clara. Dartmouth will remain in the Golden State on Tuesday to take on Stanford at 5 p.m.
