PRINCETON, N.J. – The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-5 decision at No. 9 Princeton in the Ivy League opener for both.
Junior Taryn Deck led the Big Green (3-2, 0-1 Ivy) with a pair of goals in the loss, while Olivia Hompe's three helped the Tigers (4-0, 1-0 Ivy) remain unbeaten in 2016.
“Our plan was to come out in the first 10 minutes and set the tone for the game,” head coach Amy Patton said. “It turned out that they (Princeton) were the ones who were able to do that because it just didn't happen for us.”
The story of the game was in Princeton's ability to hold Dartmouth junior Jaclyn Leto — the Ivy League's leading scorer in both points and goals — off the scoresheet in the game.
With Leto held in check, the Green and White needed goals from Deck, Courtney Weisse, Elizabeth Mastrio and Kathryn Giroux.
The early stages of Saturday's game gave the appearance that the contest would be a defensive battle as the Tigers held just a 4-1 lead at intermission with a Giroux free-position shot the only breakthrough on the scoreboard for the visitors.
Mastrio and Deck scored two of the first three goals in the second frame, cutting the Dartmouth deficit to just two, 5-3. However, a 4-0 run by Princeton in the next five-plus minutes pushed the home team's lead up to five and seemingly out of reach.
Deck would add another and Weisse her lone marker of the day in the final minutes, but it wasn't enough to upset the ninth-ranked Tigers.
“The turning point was in that four-goal run,” Patton said. “That seemed to highlight the difference in experience between these two teams. We needed to get draws and stop their momentum and we couldn't do it, but that comes with experience, which we are getting more of every game.
“You can't expect to win games when you only play well in spurts,” Patton added.
The final stats sheet saw both teams finish with 17 shots in goal in the game, but 12 saves from Princeton's Ellie DeGarmo proved to be the biggest difference on this day at Sherrerd Field at Class of 52 Stadium. DeGarmo made eight saves in the second half alone as the Big Green ratcheted up the intensity with 17 attempts in the final stanza.
Freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Wahle made six saves in her first Ancient Eight appearance.
The Green held a 10-8 advantage in draw controls, while turning the ball over 10 times, three fewer than their opponents.
Dartmouth has a two-week break before returning to action in Los Angeles on March 20 and 23 for a pair of non-conference games against Denver and USC.
