HANOVER, N.H. — Both the Ivy League and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) selected Dartmouth junior
Chris Burkholder as its Pitcher of the Week for games played April 4-10. It is the first weekly honor for the reliever, and the second earned by a Big Green pitcher from the Ivy League this year.
Burkholder, a 5-11 right-hander from Monrovia, California, played a large part in three of Dartmouth's four victories last week. In non-conference action last Wednesday, he entered the game against Holy Cross with the Big Green trailing, 1-0, in the top of the sixth with two on and nobody out. While he surrendered a one-out infield single, he escaped the inning without allowing a run to cross the plate, then proceeded to throw two more scoreless stanzas while Dartmouth rallied to tie in the sixth and take the lead in the seventh to give Burkholder his first victory of the season, 2-1.
On Sunday in a rematch of the last three Ivy League Championship Series against Columbia, Burkholder locked down a 3-1 victory in game one with a perfect seventh for his first save of the year, then came back in the second game and tossed three more shutout innings while matching a career high with five strikeouts to keep Dartmouth in the game. The Big Green eventually rallied for three runs in the ninth for a 7-6 walk-off win and a doubleheader sweep of the Lions.
For the week, Burkholder hurled seven innings and did not allow a run on just three hits and two walks to go with 10 strikeouts.
Earning a spot on the Ivy League honor roll this week were fellow pitcher
Duncan Robinson, who defeated Penn, 2-1, with his fourth straight complete game, and junior first baseman
Michael Ketchmark who hit .438 (7-for-16) with a double, homer, three walks, three runs and four RBIs in the five games.
Dartmouth hosts UMass Lowell (13-14) this afternoon at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be streamed live via Big Green Insider on the Ivy League Digital Network with Wayne Young '72 calling all of the action.
Notes: Penn shortstops Ryan Mincher and Princeton first baseman Zack Belski shared the Ivy League Player of the Week award, while Harvard freshman Ben Skinner took home rookie honors … Bryant senior Buck McCarthy was the NEIBA Player of the Week.
