THIS WEEK
Dartmouth men's lacrosse will play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, heading to Massachusetts to face UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. Just two games remain on the schedule for the Big Green after this mid-week contest.
LAST TIME OUT
After leading Princeton for the entirety of the first half, Dartmouth fell to the Tigers by a score of 7-3 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Sherrer Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. The first half was very low scoring, as just three goals were netted during the opening 30 minutes, with all three being credited to Dartmouth. Richie Loftus broke the scoreless draw with 6:45 to play in the first quarter following a pass from Jack Korzelius, and Evan Key followed that up with one of his own three minutes later. A combined 12 shots and 15 minutes later, KC Beard made it 3-0 in favor of the visitors with his fourth of the season with 3:55 to play in the second. The Tigers got their first marker of the afternoon three and a half minutes into the quarter and, nine minutes later, Princeton had scored three more unanswered tallies to take a one-goal lead over Dartmouth heading into the fourth. With the home team sporting a 4-3 edge at the start of the final 15 minutes, Princeton went on to score three more times to take a 7-3 lead which would last until the end of the game.
SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS
UMass Lowell has struggled a bit this season. Its two wins came in back-to-back weeks against Jacksonville (12-9) and Wagner (12-11) at the beginning of March and, since then, the River Hawks have dropped six straight games. UMass Lowell has had some heartbreakingly close losses, such as a 9-8 loss to Hartford in three overtimes and an 11-9 loss to Vermont. Sean Tyrrell leads the team in goals (18) and points (32) and Keenan Koswin is first in assists (15).
LAST TIME AGAINST UMASS LOWELL
On April 21, 2015, Dartmouth scored its most points of the season with an 18-9 victory over UMass Lowell during the teams' first-ever meeting on Scully-Fahey Field. The first quarter was relatively quiet, as just two goals were scored during the opening 15 minutes. The River Hawks got on the board first with a Martin Winter marker with 12:51 to play and the visitors remained one ahead until the end of the quarter. With nine seconds remaining in the first and just one tick left with the extra player, Cam Lee scored to tie the score at one going into the second. Dartmouth's first lead of the game came just over 10 seconds into the second quarter, when Adam Fishman found the back of the net for the 21st time this season. From there, the Big Green took that lead and ran with it, outscoring the River Hawks, 6-1, with goals by Cody George, Korzelius, Adam Hull and Fishman, keeping the opponents scoreless for over 20 minutes to end the second with an 8-2 edge. UMass Lowell found its stride in the third quarter, scoring five times and holding the home team to three goals to make it much closer game. After trading points back and forth, the two teams entered the final 15 minutes with the Green and White leading, 11-7. It was Dartmouth that found its groove in the fourth, scoring five times off goals by Jake Weil, Beard, Fishman and Austin Duncan before allowing another UMass Lowell goal, making the score 15-8. George scored twice more, bringing his season total to four, while Cormac Dugan netted his first collegiate goal with 1:17 remaining to end the evening.
BEHIND THE BENCH
Brendan Callahan is in his second season at Dartmouth after being named the 10th head coach in the program's 89-year history in August of 2014. Two new faces join Callahan on the sidelines in 2016: Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh and Brian Small. Hackett-Dalgliesh came to Hanover from UMass Lowell, where he was an assistant coach for the team's first year as a Division I team, while Small served as head coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first two seasons as a varsity program.
FRESH FACES
Fourteen of the 40 players on the roster are donning the Green and White uniform for the first time. Making up the Class of 2019 are Cameron Nolting, David Marshall, Harrison Lane, Will Randell, Bo Forsen, Jack Auteri, Austin Meacham, Joe Balaban, Griffin Miller, Matt Tanenblatt, Landon McKenzie, Armin Mortazavi and Tyler Haskell. Also making his Big Green debut is sophomore Steve Satterthwaite, who played one season and red-shirted another at Hofstra. Leading the freshmen so far in 2016 is Randell with his two goals and two assists.
LEADING THE WAY
Osborne remains the team-leader in all three categories: goals (18), assists (13) and points (31). He has already surpassed his career-best 12 goals from last season and is just two points away from a career-high, which was also set last year. With his assist against Princeton on Saturday, Korzelius is second on the team with 16 points (11G, 5A). Meacham is first in ground balls (37) and Don Stephan leads in faceoffs (77-for-179, .430).
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Balaban played all 60 minutes against the Tigers, ending the day with nine saves. So far this season, he has played 272 minutes, has made 65 saves and has a .481 save percentage. Friedensohn has seen 382 minutes of action, has made 61 saves and has a .473 save percentage. Miller has five minutes of time under his belt, has made a pair of saves and has a 1.000 save percentage. Dartmouth's other goalie, Ty Vandenberg, has not seen time in net yet this season.
