HANOVER, N.H. – For the fourth time this season the Dartmouth men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw, this time with Vermont in Burlington on Saturday afternoon.
With the tie, the Big Green are now 1-2-4 and the Catamounts are 8-1-1.
Dartmouth once again went the distance in another double overtime contest that featured lockdown defense on both ends of the field. Big Green senior goalkeeper, James Hickok, needed to make just two saves, while Vermont's keeper made just one stop through 110 minutes.
“Firstly, I am very proud of our entire group, head coach Chad Riley said. “It has been a heavy week for us and they showed a lot of fight for one another today. I wouldn't say it was our best day, but I was happy of the effort and the attitude our team showed throughout the game. Anytime you feel you haven't played your best, you must credit your opponent. I can see why Vermont has only dropped one game this year, they are a good team and have a lot of potential.”
In the first half, each squad took four shots apiece, but Dartmouth needed just one to get on the scoreboard first. Midway through the 27th minute, Jonathan Nierenberg netted his first goal of the season. Big Green captain, Emmanuel Arteaga, centered the ball into the goal area, setting up Nierenberg to head the ball in for the first tally of the day.
Dartmouth took its one goal lead into the locker room at halftime and looked to get some insurance in the second half. About 20 minutes into the second frame, the Catamounts were able to get the equalizer when Jon Arnar Barodal hit Stefan Lamanna with a pass at the top of the box for the goal.
Tied 1-1, the Big Green kept trying to pressure Vermont's end of the field throughout the remainder of regulation, but could not score, sending the game into overtime.
The extra frames proved to be a physical 20 minutes, as the team's combined for three yellow cards, but no red cards were issued. The Catamounts came out hot in the first overtime period with four shots, but Dartmouth's defensive front held, keeping the game tied which ensured another 10 minutes of play. In the final period each team registered three shots, but neither found the back of the net, ending the contest in a 1-1 draw.
“Overall you always feel you want more out of a game, but I am proud of our group,” Riley said “This early season schedule has toughened us up nicely for the Ivy League and we will be ready for the next challenge in a week's time.”
The Big Green return to action when Dartmouth opens up Ivy League play on Oct. 1 at Princeton. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers.
