HANOVER, N.H. – Despite outshooting its opponent, the Dartmouth men's soccer team fell, 1-0 to Washington at Burnham Field on Thursday night in the team's 2016 home opener.
With the loss the Big Green are now 0-1-2, while the Huskies improve to 3-1-0.
It was a happy homecoming for Washington head coach Jamie Clark, who is originally from Hanover, and is the son of former Dartmouth coach, Bobby Clark. Jamie Clark also coached with current Big Green head coach, Chad Riley when the two were assistants at Notre Dame.
“There's no moral victories,” Riley said. “One of the hardest things to do in soccer is play well and lose. I think we had enough chances to win the game, but after a performance like that against a good team, I'm very proud of the group.”
In front of a huge crowd, the Big Green fought hard, but could not get on the scoreboard. The first half got off to a quiet start as each team tried to create scoring chances. Washington held a slight 6-4 advantage in shots throughout the period and managed to strike first.
In the 22nd minute, the Huskies' David Coly scored the only goal of the night, after the forward went on a quick breakaway before burying a shot in the lower right corner of the goal.
Dartmouth ever resilient, kept trying to set up an opportunity in Washington's end of the field. Toward the end of the half, Justin Donawa nearly had a break away goal of his own, but his shot went just wide of the net.
After the halftime break the Big Green kept searching for the equalizer, while locking down on defense. Kyle Coffee, who assisted on the Huskies lone goal attempted a shot in the box, but it was blocked by a Dartmouth defender.
With about 25 minutes remaining in the contest, the Big Greens' Matt Greer registered a hard shot that had to be saved. He finished the game with five shots total.
“He's always so close to scoring,” Riley said. And this start to the season has been his best by far. He's had moments in the attack and has had a positive attitude. He a great performance today, as did a number of our guys.”
As the clock ticked down to less then two minutes, Dartmouth kept getting shots in Washington's end of the pitch, including a flurry of chances after a late corner kick, but it could not find the back of the net.
The Big Green return to Burnham Field this weekend when Dartmouth hosts Seattle on Sunday, Sept 11 at 5 p.m. The contest can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers with Dave Collins on the call.
